Are you looking for an excellent children’s book to help explain the true meaning behind Memorial Day? If so you will certainly want to check out “Memorial Day Surprise” by Theresa Golding. Beyond the barbeques, parades, and fireworks we are reminded to remember the veterans.
In “Memorial Day Surprise” a little boy is going to the big Memorial Day parade when his mother tells him she has a surprise for him at the parade. All through the parade with the fire trucks, candy and bands the boy wonders if that was the surprise. Then his mother explains Memorial Day to him and at the end of the parade he sees his surprise. There in the parade being pushed in his wheel chair is his grandfather, a war veteran.
The illustrations by Alexandra Artigas are bright and show veterans in wheel chairs and uniforms. This is the perfect children’s book to open the door for discussion of the reason we celebrate Memorial Day. The anticipation of what Marco’s surprise is keeps children on the edge of their seats wanting to know what the surprise is.
Other books by Theresa Golding include: Abby's Asthma and the Big Race, Niner, The Truth About Twelve, and The Secret Within.
