The Kentucky Derby is coming up (Saturday May 1, 2010) so what better time to take a look at some wonderful children’s books about horses. “Barbaro: America’s Horse” by Shelley Mickle is a perfect book recommended for ages 9-12.
Barbaro was born to run and run he did, winning the Kentucky Derby there were high hopes that he would join other great horses such as Settle Slew and Secretariat as a Triple Crown winner. “Barbaro: America’s Horse” covers the life of this famous horse from his birth, through training, and on to his racing career including his win at the Kentucky Derby and his injury at the Preakness and his final days.
“Barbaro: America’s Horse” is more than just a story of a horse. This children’s book contains a wealth of information a glossary of terms used in the book, beautiful photographs of Barbaro and some of his ‘friends’, and contributions from his owner Mrs. Jackson. A special treat is the pullout full color poster of Barbaro at the back of the book.
Mickle did a terrific job of depicting Barbaro’s life story from the view of the horse but while there are plenty of laughs and chuckles throughout the book the reader should also be prepared for some tears also. “Barbaro: America’s Horse” shares a message of hope and determination!
