A review of John's Secret Dreams by Doreen Rappaport

John's Secret Dreams by D. Rappaport illustrations by Bryan Collier

At first there was hesitation, stumbling upon this book at Borders, John’s Secret Dreams, by Doreen Rappaport (2004). Thinking to myself, what is this all about? Quickly checking to see if it was a children’s book and, yes,Hyperion Books for Children was on the inside title page, I purchased the book and began reading.

However, I was still curious to see what lay inside, written on the pages of this eye catching picture book. Initially, I was contented to see that the author and illustrator were both award winning artists. Reading through my initial uncertainty regarding the context and content, the deeper message began to make sense. Deeper meaning, as in the book is not just fluff and happy endings, as we find in many children’s books. This book was a life story. It discusses the life of John Lennon, and is geared toward children. It draws upon those difficult issues that children are faced with at such young ages. It would be perfect for older elementary children in arts and literature or music education. It is important to know the life story behind many of our famous authors and artists. It is essential for children to know the meaning behind the works of the artists they study and why their work was important to them. This gives way to their own creative expression and how they can apply it to their adult lives and make wise choices. As a teacher, I might not read this book to younger children at all. I might opt for the okay from parents first before opting to share this story with my students.

It explains those adult emotions and situations that often affect children into their adult lives; parent abandonment, divorce, relationships, the pressure of success and failure, creative expression, forgiveness and reconciliation. This book may be considered a bit controversial and I might slightly agree. The book does talk about Lennon’s life, career with the Beatles, his drug use, divorce from his wife and his murder, yet, does discuss the over lying message of hope for peace in our world. Yes, John Lennon’s dream was for peace. I believe that this message is clear and important. Just like Lennon and the Beatles, today’s children are growing up in a world surrounded by war, controversy and tough issues. They will be the next generation making those tough decisions, living with the consequences and striving for peace. So, look into this and other titles by Doreen Rappaport and share them with your children.

OK, is it me or does John Lennon have an eerie resemblance to Willy Wonka on that book cover?
