In all schools these days, curriculum are bulging at the seams, expectations are running high, class sizes a growing larger, while salaries have stalled in the midst of a stagnant economy. Now someone wants you to seriously consider adding childhood obesity prevention to your already overloaded plate, and no matter how simple, it still feels like the proverbial straw that could break the camel’s back.
Two Minutes Per Week…
Now before you hit the eject button let me interject that this little intervention takes less than TWO MINUTES PER WEEK out of each of your student’s jam packed schedules. That is to say, out of the 30 plus hours (1800 plus minutes) that students spend in school every week, this activity requires LESS THAN TWO MINUTES!
As the result of this weekly two minutes of time and effort you can help your school’s students to naturally immunize themselves against obesity (and the myriad of related problems including poor academic performance and anti-social behaviors) for life.
You’ll Even Increase Test Scores
In other words, if you can figure out where in your curriculum to squeeze TWO MINUTES PER WEEK for each one of your students, you could guarantee that they’ll never have to wrestle with America’s # 1 health threat, and they’ll never have to experience the myriad of social problems (i.e. bullying) that go hand in hand with obesity. On top of that, since obesity has been shown to severely undermine academic performance, you’ll also increase the odds of their test scores going up in the process.
To Cash in on This Predictable Dividend
So to cash in on this predictable dividend sitting right out on the horizon, the question becomes, where in your piled high curriculum does this two minute per week activity best fit, most logically fit, most seamlessly fit? Is it in the PE curriculum? Is it in the home room setting? Is it before or after school?
Making the World a Better Place
The answer in school A may be different than in school B or in school C. But surely in the over 1800 minutes you have students each and every week there’s a place in which to squeeze these two magical minutes worth of activity. Answer this question and you’re in the process of making the quality of life better for your students, their families, your teachers, and the community at large.
