Baby Matters LLC of Berwyn, PA, is recalling 30,000 Nap Nanny portable baby recliners after the death of a four month old Michigan girl.  "The Nap Nanny was being used in a crib, and the infant was harnessed into the NapNanny and was found hanging over the side, caught between the product and the crib bumper.

There has been one other incident reported; that infant sustained a cut to the forehead.  In this case as well, the Nap Nanny was being used inside a crib, despite package instructions not to use the product in this way. There have also been 22 additional incidents of infants hanging over the side of or falling out of the Nap Nanny despite being harnessed in.

Infants are at increased risk of falling out or hanging over the side if the Velcro straps are not properly attached to the D rings on the foam, or if consumers are using an older model that does not have D rings.

Parents should never use the Nanny inside a crib, playard, or other enclosure due to possible entrapment and suffocation hazard.  Nor should the Nap Nanny be placed on a countertop or other surface, creating a fall hazard.  Use the Nap Nanny on the floor only.

The Nap Nanny's were sold at a variety of retailers and online at www.napnanny.com  between January 2009 and July 2010 for about $130.

Those consumers who have a model without D rings should contact the company for a coupon towards the purchase of a new Nap Nanny.  Those with models including D rings should visit the product website to get proper usage instructions and warnings.  Do not use the Nap Nanny with your child until these remedies have been taken.

This is also a good reminder to make sure you are using infant products in a way that is consistent with the manufacturers instructions.  Don't second guess safety warnings: they are there for a reason.

Very scary to read about this. My son actually fell over the side, while buckled. He woke us up screaming in the middle of the night. We went in there and his head was pinned between the bumper pad and nap nanny. Who knows what would have happen if we hadn't woken up.

Daniel, Did you receive the same product warnings that baby matters issued after the recall? I purchased a 2nd generation nap nanny and the warnings are clearly different than the product insert I received and they are not recalling the 2nd generation.

It says don't put it on the crib or playard, or on a surface, why people keep doing stupid stuff blaming others.?

Because people think ignorance is a god enough excuse.....if we ignore it, it won't happen. I followed the rules for all of the stuff I bought, and never had an issue. The article even says, "This is also a good reminder to make sure you are using infant products in a way that is consistent with the manufacturers instructions. Don't second guess safety warnings: they are there for a reason."
Isn't it worth it to take the extra steps/time to be pre-cautious rather then to be lazy or ignorant and risk losing the most important thing in your life?

Daniel...why didn't you read the directions? It says not to do that you silly goose. Would you have sued and blamed nap nanny had something happened because of your ignorance?
