Symptoms of autism

Symptoms of autism vary with each child. There are many red flags that may indicate your child could have some form of autism. I have listed some below but if you feel your child's behavior needs assessment journal what you see and make an appointment with a pediatrician, family doctor, or psychologist.

A large red flag is loss of language skills. This can manifest as either verbal or nonverbal language in early childhood. The language delay can also be seen as a difficulty starting conversations, and continuing a conversation. The child may also not understand verbal cues, they may not understand if you are using humor by your tone of voice. It is important to note that not all children with an Autistic disorders are non-verbal, in fact many have verbal skills.

Autistic individuals also show impairment in social interactions and relationships. There are many ways this can display itself. The symptoms include; difficulty with nonverbal communication, failure to establish friendships with children the same age, and a lack of empathy.

Other red flags to watch for are a limited interest in activities, toys or play. The child may be interested in parts of the toy and not the toy itself, for example just the wheels of the car. The child may also play with toys in an odd manner, they may line up toys instead of play with them. Often the child becomes preoccupied with a certain toy or subject, like video games.

The red flags show before the child is 3 years old. Although symptoms can show early getting an accurate diagnosis can be difficult and misdiagnosed. It is also important to note that children with Autism have sleep problems 40 - 70% of the time.

If you suspect autism it is important to get help from a professional. If you do not like what you hear it is important to know you have the right to a second opinion. You know your child best and if you feel uncomfortable with what the doctor says you should seek a second opinion, or third depending on your situation.
