I hate three point games. I never quite understood what was so wrong with a tie. I despise the shootout. If it is good enough to decide a regular season game, wouldn't it be good enough for a playoff game? The answer is always no, and that's the hypocrisy of it. So, for the rest of the NHL season, I will be pointing out that hypocrisy of the league, by giving the real NHL standings, free from three point games. You either win or lose on the ice. If you can't settle it in overtime- one point for each team and we go home content. The formula to find truepoints is simple, take the amount of points a team has and subtract the number of shout out wins. That will take away the point that goes in the win column that those teams are currently getting. The current rules give a point for reaching overtime. That's a joke. So I also subtract the true overtime losses. Since shootout losses and games lost in the overtime period fall under the same category, I just subtract the number of shootout losses (games that should have been ties) from the games lost in overtime (which should give the team no points.) It creates a stat I call the True Overtime Loss or TOTL. This is the truest way to decide which team is better, and point out any injustices the three point game has harbored.

3.5- The truepoint standings differ with the NHL's current point system most starkly when they are looked at from the conference playoff standings. The Rangers would fall from 7th in the Eastern Conference to 10th. Carolina and Pittsburgh would both be in, with Montreal winning a tie breaker between the three teams for the sixth seed. Florida would have a significant point cushion and Buffalo would have a lot of work to do to make the playoffs. In the Western Conference, the Sharks would be the first seed, with the standings from there down staying the same. The difference here would be that there would be more points separating the teams 7-12. Currently, Edmonton is only up three points on the 12th place Blues. In the truepoint senario, the Blues would have seven points to make up on seventh seeded Nashville and six on eigth seeded Edmonton.
For those who doubt that the three point game bastardizes hockey, here's some damning evidence.
