Are you looking for a way to serve? Consider volunteering with The Philadelphia Children’s Foundation’s new program for high school students.
According to Mayu Nakamura, “The Philadelphia Children’s Foundation (PCF) is an educational support organization, serving children, youth and families in the greater Philadelphia area.”
“This spring we launched PCF’s Career Clubs, a student outreach program at Germantown High School. Career Club meetings are held monthly to teach students about career development, job readiness skills, and postsecondary school preparation. The goal is to provide students with the motivation, knowledge and skills they need to become productive adults. To further that goal, PCF will incorporate Workplace Tours into the Career Club program this fall. In addition to attending monthly in-school meetings, students will tour local businesses to learn about the variety of industries and jobs available in the greater Philadelphia area.”
PCF offers opportunities for individuals and businesses in the community to engage students in a variety of ways. “We are currently looking for dynamic speakers to facilitate a Career Club meeting at Germantown High School for the 2010-2011 academic year,” said Nakamura. “Volunteer facilitators are needed to deliver informative and engaging presentations during school hours on any number of topics pertaining to job and/or college readiness, such as resume writing, interviewing skills, leadership development, networking, and college admissions.”
In addition to individual facilitators, PCF is also seeking professional volunteers to host Workplace Tours at their place of business. Nakamura says, “This is an opportunity for businesses to get involved in their community and prepare tomorrow’s workforce.”
If you or your organization is interested in getting involved in the community and helping to prepare tomorrow’s workforce, consider volunteering with The Philadelphia Children’s Foundation. To participate, volunteers will need to have PA Child Abuse History Clearance and Criminal Background Checks. PCF will reimburse all related costs and provide additional materials for this process. The Philadelphia Children’s Foundation is located in Chestnut Hill at 7600 Stenton Ave., Suite 1-B. More information about PCF can be found at the foundation’s website.
According to Ms. Nakamura, “As a nonprofit organization, PCF values the time and talents of our dedicated volunteers. With additional help, we hope to expand this pilot program and replicate it in several other area schools to reach as many students in need of college and career guidance.”
