Subway VS. Cousin’s Subs
The majority of fast food restaurants currently offer some type of meal deal. Choosing from the catchy 79.,89., 99. deals or those great dollar menu options can give you variety but it is difficult to refrain from the fatty tacos, hamburgers and fries. I wanted something that my family would enjoy while remaining attentive to the calorie and trans fat intake, so I am comparing Cousin Subs and Subway.
I love sub sandwiches, for cheap eats both Cousin's Sub’s and Subway are competing for your patronage.
Cousin’s Subs, currently offers two 7 ½ inch subs for $5.00, you can choose from; Tuna, Ham & Provolone or Turkey. In addition, you must purchase one side (chips or fries), in order to receive the 2 for 5 deal. With Cousin’s Subs you must specify additional items like cheese for an additional price (that should be standard on a sub in my opinion), lettuce, tomatoes and onions are standard; and let me tell you about the mayo. For the tuna sub, be careful, they slather it on as if they were laying bricks. This totally takes away from the taste of the sub, unless you are a mayo person. Also, the bread choices are standard but are good quality sub rolls.
Cousin’s Sub’s offers a drive-thru service. Cousin's Sub's have several drive-thru’s in the Milwaukee area and all of them are slow, not just 5 minutes from ordering to pick up, but 20 minutes. When I complained about the wait time, the drive-thru attendant told me, “sorry there is nothing I can do,” someone came in and had a large order. Really? So be ready to wait for that 2 for 5 meal deal and this is common at the majority of the Milwaukee locations.
For a family of two, the deal costs about $7.50 (including 2 bags of chips), but you burn up gas waiting in the drive-thru. I don’t know how they will survive in this economy without speedy service.
Subway offers eight $5.00 foot long sub favorites: Meatball Marinara, Cold Cut Combo, Spicy Italian, Veggie Delite, Black Forest Ham, Oven Roasted Chicken Breast, a BLT and Tuna, along with twelve bread choices (the majority should be available, but it may depends on your location); Subway’s feature is that you watch them place the items on your sub; you build your sub the way you want it.
I love veggies so I always request all of them: lettuce, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, banana peppers, cucumbers, jalapeno peppers and black olives. All of Subway’s sandwich values include cheese unless otherwise noted.
The Oven Roasted Chicken Breast is a delight, but watch out for the Chipotle Southwest Sauce for dressing, I didn’t pay attention to the calories until I looked at the nutritional value pamphlet, needless to say; I will be switching to the Fat Free Honey Mustard or the Sweet Onion. The Meatball Marinara comes highly recommend by the teenager in my home.
Subway offers a foot long sub and you can save half for later, if I like or split with someone. I actually feel as if I am getting a really good “cheap eat” deal. There is no drive-thru, but the wait in line differs on what you put on your sub and if you want you sub toasted.
