Key Largo Conch House is worth the drive

As I have argued previously, when funds are tight, we need to plan our pleasures carefully and make them special. To celebrate National Eggs Benedict Day (April 16th), head down to the Key Largo Conch House (formerly called Key Largo Coffee House) where you can choose among six varieties of the breakfast favorite and sip Mango iced tea on the covered wrap-around porch.Key Largo Conch House

The famous Benedicts featured are served with three poached eggs and hollandaise sauce and a side of breakfast potatoes. Choose among the Traditional or Southwest (served on a corn muffin with sausage and salsa) for $7.95, the Portabello (with portabellas, spinach, and tomatoes) for $8.95, the Californian (with turkey, avocado, and tomato) for $9.95, the Crab Cakes (traditional Benedict except crab cakes instead of Canadian bacon) for $10.95, and the Mediterranean (with feta, mushrooms, and shrimp) for $12.95.

Besides the Benedicts, the breakfast menu highlights also include the Cajun Omelet, Potatoes, and Toast, their “#1 selling omelet” made with “andouille sausage, green peppers, onions, tomatoes, pepper jack cheese and Cajun seasoning” for $7.95 and the Texas Breakfast Burrito with egg, sausage, cheddar, mushrooms and peppers wrapped in a chipotle tortilla and served with a side of breakfast potatoes for $6.95.

The lunch menu is similarly priced and just as delicious, with paninis and wraps for around $9. The best lunch deal has to be the Soup of the Day and 1/2 Fajita Chicken Wrap for $6.95. For a few dollars more ($1-$2.50) you can upgrade the soup to the famous Lobster or She Crab Bisque or Conch Chowder, or upgrade the wrap to the Californian, Cuban, Club, Tuna & Apple, Key Largo Fish, or Portabella & Feta Wrap. Or skip the wrap and get a breadbowl of the bisques for $8.95 or the chowder for $6.95.

The dinner menu is out of my price range (most entrees are around $20 per plate), though the appetizers could function as a meal (around $8), and the spinach-ricotta Stuffed Eggplant over penne sounds amazing and perhaps worth the splurge at $14. Parents will be pleased to find that their kids have a good selection of breakfast, lunch, and dinner entrees for under $4 (with the exception of the $7.95 cheese pizza) on “Romeo’s Kids Menu.”

Key Largo Conch HouseMaybe the reason this place is so special is because if you don’t know it’s there, you’ll drive right past it. Indeed, its charm partly comes from the old Keys-Victorian-style house that the restaurant inhabits and the grounds that feature resident animals Romeo the parrot and Chief the dog. Lush palms and other native trees effectively hide the place from the traffic on Overseas Highway and create a laid-back dining sanctuary. Look for Key Largo Conch House oceanside at Mile Marker 100.2, next to Enterprise Car Rental. Parking is in the back.
