There's good news and bad news about Agave's happy hour.

First, the good:  Patio season began this week, and Agave's is one of the best in the Valley.  It's cool, well-shaded by lacy mesquite trees, and calmed by babbling fountains.

The $5 margaritas, made with nothing but Blue Agave tequila and edged with a slice of lime, are powerful. (Salt-rimmed glasses are optional.)

The bad news: Days of the 25-cent tacos are over.

Agave used the mini tacos as a winter promotion, and now that patio season has begun, happy hour tacos are $2.

But they're a great deal at that price:  Chicken tacos are moderately spiced and paired with shredded cabbage; carne asada tacos are even better, with generous servings of marinated steak.

Better still, appetizers are still accompanied by the best free salsa in the Valley.

When we've been at Agave before, the salsa verde was cool.

Yesterday, the tomatillo-based salsa packed a punch, and our previous favorite, the charred-tomato salsa, was much weaker.

They're accompanied by a milder, chunky tomato salsa, and blue corn and white corn chips.

Design of Agave makes it one of the best places in the Valley for ogling -- food, art, the Summerlin crowd.

After work yesterday, sounds of the city were softened by birdsong (tiny birds watch diners from chair tops) and those elegant fountains.

The temperature was still hot, but servers brought icy water with lime and refreshing margaritas with more lime.

Heavy, multi-colored glasses were complemented by medallions of color thrown on the patio floor by the restaurant's round, stained glass windows.

Agave's patio furniture is unique too -- some of it custom-made copper -- with comfy cushions in bright colors of turquoise and pink, to blend with that in-your-face fuchsia of the exterior walls.

The cactus gardens and four kiva fireplaces are a sweet match of cool and heat.
