Look around Create Burger and see if you can figure what's missing.

Choices abound here -- pick your meat size, bun type, cheese (8 kinds), sauce (26 varieties) and toppings (only 20).

What won't you find?  Garbage.

There isn't a single place to dump your scraps (if you have any).

In a city where recycling lags behind most of the rest of the country, Create Burger has made the bold decision to go where other fast-food joints (so far) refuse to go:  re-using waste.

Dishes, cutlery, and even straws are all made from corn or sugar cane at Create, so are composted.

Food waste is composted.

All glass, metal, plastic and other stuff that can be recycled is carted off to be reduced and re-used.

You don't even pick up your own garbage at Create -- energetic and friendly staff take it away, for separation and recycling or composting.

How eco-friendly.

How un-Vegas.

You would expect to pay a lot more for "designer" gourmet burgers and frozen custard here, right?

Recycling isn't cheap in the Valley (and that's if you're lucky enough to live in the rare neighborhood where you can pay for the privilege).

But Create Burger prices are very reasonable, especially considering the quality.

And did we mention that their vegetables and fruit are organic?  Normally you would expect to pay a premium for that health benefit.

We haven't enjoyed burgers everywhere in the Valley, so can't claim these are the best.  (Everyone tells us In-N-Out Burger is #1 in Vegas.)

But we don't know of any other place that can match Create's commitment to the environment and its number of choices for make-your-own-burgers.

Plus, Create serves the best homemade veggie burger we've had in Vegas. (True, there aren't many places serving them anyway.)

The veggie burger here is homemade too, another bonus, using a big, squishy combination of heart-friendly oats, wheat, brown rice, mushrooms and spices. It's only $4.61 plain.

Burgers come in four sizes: mini (2.5 ounce, $3.75); modest (1/4-lb, $4.25); major (1/3-lb., $4.75); and monarch, (1/2-lb., $5.75).

All beef is fresh, never frozen, and it's Angus, so well-marbled between meat and fat.

There are other non-beef options, including turkey ($4.75) and portabello mushroom ($5.01).

All these prices are for plain burgers, with no extra charge for choice of bun (from old-fashioned/processed white to Hawaiian or onion buns to lettuce wraps).

There's no charge for any one of eight kinds of cheese, unless you want to slap on more, then it's 65 cents per slice.

Twenty toppings include everything from grilled pineapple to jalapenos.

Sauces stagger the imagination, with so many choices you're guaranteed to return just to try them.  There's elegant (Grey Poupon dijon mustard or basil pesto mayo); spicy (Cajun garlic); and especially creative ("atomic mayo").

All burgers are available as a package deal with fresh-cut fries and a soft drink, for less than $3 more.

Onion rings or sweet potato fries (healthier choice) as sides range from $1.69 to $2.29.

Healthiest option:  Salad instead of fries is only 99 cents.

Didn't see many customers opting for that, because the fries are homemade, and served in generous portions.

Like most Vegas eateries, portions of everything are large here (check the huge, $6.50 salads), and we felt stuffed after our no-scraps meal.

But not so stuffed that we couldn't try the frozen custard.

We used a Groupon coupon for the meal, so with two burgers, one side salad, and one sweet potato fries, we paid only $2.91 on site for two scoops of custard, including tax (and before tipping on the total price).

More on the frozen custard later.

Why 5 stars in this burger-happy city?

Eco-friendly. Heart-healthy choices. Plenty of options. Organic produce! Special prices for kids. Enthusiastic staff (from cash to servers to managers).
