News Flash: Congressman Burgess introduces bill to continue Opportunity Scholarship Program

Just coming into my email inbox is an exciting development from Congressman Michael Burgess, M.D. (R-Texas) in that he has introduced H.R. 4312, the DC Student Opportunity and Choice Act which would continue, as established, the voucher program in the nation's capital.

"The DC school voucher program has been undeniably successful for the student who have had the opportunity to participate, so it would make sense to continue the program and expand it to even more students in the District of Columbia," Burgess said.

This bill would overwrite the language contained in the recent 1,000 page omnibus spending bill by a joint conference of a House and Senate Appropriations Committee awaiting the President's signature that effectively ends private school choice in the city.

Co-sponsoring the legislation are Congressmen John Boehner (R-Ohio), John Kline (R-Minnesota), Darrell Issa (R-California), and Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-New Jersey).

Poverty is what "ends private school choice" in DC. If these Republicans are so keen on helping DC kids, why don't they donate their own money to the (mostly religious) schools they think are doing such a great job? I bet most of them could swing the $7,500 MAX offered. True school choice would require full subsidies for all DC kids to all private schools - not just religious - and actual oversight of the funds. Bet these people wouldn't be so keen on vouchers if Islamic schools were included. Enough with the political posturing. Put up the funds or shut up.
