Steve Barr, founder of Green Dot Charter Schools, is stepping down from being chairman of the board. Barr is said to be withdrawing from the position to work on “national education issues,” says a spokesperson.
Barr is also famed for co-founding the non-partisan organization “Rock the Vote” and has hosted an inaugural ball for former president Clinton.
The first Green Dot school opened nine years ago with only 140 students. Barr's vision was to improve public schools with smaller schools and motivated and innovation oriented teachers. Green Dot says 80% of their ninth graders will graduate and most of them be accepted into a four year college.
No details were provided by Barr’s spokesperson in regards to his withdrawal or future projects.
It is notable that Barr recently met with the Obama Administration in discussions about Green Dot’s methods and whether or not these can be helpful in turning around 5,000 of the nation’s lowest performing schools.
Green Dot board member, Loyola Marymount University School of Education Dean Shane Martin, will assume Barr’s role as chairman.
