In LA it isn't the mayor or bureaucrats that are the strongest force in demanding control of public education--it's the parents!
Yesterday the LAUSD school board approved the Resolution for Public School Choice (sponsored by board member Yolie Flores Aguilar). The resolution would permit successful charter schools, community organizations, non-charter public schools and the teacher’s union to submit applications as potential operators of 50 new schools in LAUSD, potentially serving more than 60,000 kids.
Sixteen charter school organizations have already expressed interest in the project. Green Dot Schools made history in 2007, becoming the first outside organization to operate a traditional school.
More than 3,000 LA parents fed up with excuses for underperforming schools showed up to support the resolution and demand change. The crowd shouted: "We're not going to take it anymore!"
The LA Times called it a "Historic New Direction for LA Schools."
LA-based Parent Revolution agreed: "It was a historic day, not only because of what we did, but how we did it," Ben Austin from the Parent Revolution said.
“We must seize this moment and continue to demand change, and hold LAUSD's feet to the fire. Every community that wants transformation of their schools is still going to have to fight for it. But at long last, LAUSD has given us a path to carry that fight,” said Austin.

Great post! Every child should have options, especially when in an underperforming district.
