I think most people know that fashion meeting compassion is one of my favorite categories of do-gooders. The DC-based nonprofit Fashion Fights Poverty is a perfect example of merging fashion and compassion together. FFP missions themselves to raise awareness for initiatives that encourage and support creative, effective, and sustainable means of challenging poverty. The all volunteer organization achieves this through community programs, workshops, and their annual fashion show.

This year's events are all center around the theme of "rethink.recreate.react." They all tie into the prefix of "re", "retail" took place during the grand opening of the Guess store on F Street and benefited the nonprofit Nest, "reuse" was a fashion swap where guests donated clothes for admission and could exchange clothes with other guests. All clothing that wasn't swapped was donated to Covenant House Washington. The FFP mini-event site has a recap of all the events and information on the upcoming benefit fashion show.

The annual fashion show "Refashion" happens on September 25, 2009 at The Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC. This year's beneficiary is FFP's very own programs; one includes their global project to create income-generating and microfinance opportunities for people in developing countries. The fashion show features designs of emerging and established eco-friendly and ethical fashion designers including René Geneva Designs and Aidah Collection. Tickets start at $75 and they tend to go fast , so get yours soon. One of the best aspects about FFP is that they get people thinking about how they can combine things they're truly passionate about. Who says you can't love Donna Karen and Dress For Success? Fashion Fights Poverty is challenging people to think about new ways to address community issues.
