Saskatchewan Roughrider general manager Eric Tillman pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges involving a 16-year-old girl on Monday.
According to the Globe and Mail, Tillman has given up his day-to-day operations with the club until such a time when the team has made a decision regarding his future.
The charges were initially laid last February. Soon after, Tillman was put on a paid leave of absence. Tillman still performed his manager duties during this leave.
Apparently, Tillman had taken a double dose of muscle relaxants and sleep aids on the day of the sexual assault. It was also reported that on that same day, employees had described Tillman as being “loopy.”
“I take full responsibility for my actions, and my emotion today is for other people that I know have been impacted,” Tillman said during his apology. “It's been painful for them and while there are no adequate words, I apologize, your honour. It was very wrong."
Tillman joined the Riders in 2006. The next season, he played a large role in the team’s Grey Cup victory as he helped put the finishing touches on their roster.
The team has made no decision yet on Tillman’s future. Sentencing in the case is scheduled for Tuesday, where it appears that both sides of the case will be calling for a discharge.
