Earlier this week, the first set of never-before-seen photos of The Beatles taken by British photographer Paul Berriff during the height of Beatlemania in the 1960s were released online. The black and white photos show The Beatles on stage and candidly off stage and behind the scenes.
As a newspaper photographer in the early 1960s, Berriff captured photos of The Beatles in their early days on their rise to stardom in the UK. The photographs are being made available for sale as very limited editions and will be on display following a launch event to be held at the Menier Gallery in London on April 27. The photos will be on display for the public from April 28 to May 1.
Menier Gallery is located in the historic Menier Chocolate Factory at 51-53 Southwark Street. The gallery is run by the charity, Paintings in Hospitals, that lends contemporary works of art to hospitals. All proceeds from the gallery go to the Paintings in Hospitals charity.
Berriff talks about his time photographing The Beatles: “I built a good rapport with them, especially Paul McCartney. He always came to say hello when he saw me. At that time (1964), they were just coming on stream, they did value their media image, so they were happy to pose for you. They did all kinds of crazy things, like playing at trains (one of Berriff’s unique images). Some they would just pose for me, but a lot I would just take off the cuff so to speak, when they were just acting about.”
Berriff, now a documentary filmmaker, has captured many unique and iconic images over the years with his photographs of The Stones, Queen, The Searchers, The Hollies, Gerry and the Pacemakers and even Prince Charles.
Preview images of two more sets of photos will be released online by The Beatles Hidden Gallery on April 12 and April 19. Fans can see these rare images of The Beatles only by registering at The Beatles Hidden Gallery website. A username and password will then be e-mailed to you. The BHG website also features Beatles E-cards and a trivia quiz.
Menier Gallery is open from 10 am to 6 pm, Monday to Saturday. Admission is free. The nearest tube station is London Bridge.
