Today, on the one-year anniversary of the King of Pop's death, Michael Jackson's mother, Katherine Jackson and Michael's niece, Genevieve Jackson (the daughter of Randy Jackson), attended a special tribute event in Gary, Indiana. A monument dedicated to the King of Pop was unveiled in front of his childhood home at 2300 Jackson Street.

The large monument made of marble and concrete features a silhouette of Michael Jackson in one of his famous dance moves. The words inscribed are: "King of Pop, Michael J. Jackson, August 29, 1958 - June 25, 2009, Home Town of Michael Jackson - Gary, IN" with "Never Can Say Goodbye" at the bottom.
Katherine Jackson requested that the house be fixed up in time for the memorial event. As a result, the house received a fresh coat of white paint, new concrete on the walkway and driveway, and new bushes were planted.
Earlier this month, Michael's father, Joe Jackson, held a press conference in Gary to announce plans for a Michael Jackson museum and performing arts center. The only time Michael Jackson ever returned to Gary, Indiana was in 2003 when the performing arts center plan was originally announced. This visit is documented in the new film which was released today in Japan called "Michael Jackson Commemorated."

I was there.. it was really nice.. my kids danced with people in the street, but when Katherine stepped out of that house it was all of a sudden so claustrophobic lol it was hot as heck on top of that! We had to leave :( My kids began to freak out from the crowd after she came out/... I wanted to stay! ILY MJ (luv lives forever)
Why would you have a company's website and telephone number on a monument that is a memorial for someone? Clearly this is going to be auctioned off eventually...
I was born in Gary, Indiana, and moved as a child to L.A. -- just like the Jacksons. And while I never knew them, I share the love of Gary that they do. It was a wonderful small town, very walkable, with a thriving steel industry and hardworking people who took pride in their community. Sadly, once the mills closed and the jobs dried up, the city fell on hard times. I'm glad to see Katherine Jackson return to Gary on the anniversary of Michael's death, which I commemorated last night by watching "This Is It" again and revelling anew in Michael's gifts. His love of humanity and the planet will live on forever.
I plan to visit the Jackson family home tomorrow in honor of MJ. What a special man and talent he was. He continues to be missed by not only his family but by his millions of fans around the world, of which I am proud to say that I am one. He stood for the best there could ever be in entertainment. We will not see his like again. RIP, MJ
A company website and telephone number on the monument? Where is it at the bottom? Why would they auction off such a lovely monument in tribute to such a fabulous guy like Michael? I wished I could have been there. One day hopefully I will get there to see that lovely little home. Its so cute, just like Michael was!! L.O.V.E. you Michael>>forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Michael Jackson is my religion. I will always live by his words. Thank you for molding me into who I am today. Jacob....
