Lou Dobbs and Jon Stewart had a spirited -- and amazingly reasonable -- discussion on the "Daily Show" Wednesday night, but some of the best parts didn't make it to your TV screen. The interview simply ran too long.
Never fear, though. The show posted the extended interview (outtakes) online and we have it right here.
Dobbs expressed disdain for extremes on both the left and the right, so Stewart said good-naturedly:
You know what? You may just be a carmudgeon."
Later Dobbs returned the favor, flattering Stewart by saying:
"Jon, I think you're one of the smartest guys, as a social critic ..."
He was about to urge Stewart to consider a different point of view, but it lapsed into humor when the iincredulous Stewart interrupted Dobbs to hang on to the compliment, joking that his mother was watching. Beneath the humor, it was a truly sweet moment, proving that it is still possible for civilized people with differing opinions to communicate with genuine respect -- and levity.

I miss Lou Dobbs. He was the only one I watched on CNN. He was the only one worth watching. I wish him the best. He was right about the illegal aliens, but to some, the truth is hard to swallow.
A MUST see of Obama and Jintao.
