Will Arnold Schwarzenegger veto Harvey Milk Day?
California conservatives are pushing Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to veto legislation passed Thursday that would establish May 22 as Harvey Milk Day in commemoration of the slain San Francisco supervisor.
Randy Thomasson, president of the anti-gay PAC SaveCalifornia.com, waved a copy of "The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk" at a Capitol news conference and said:
Harvey Milk is and was a terrible role model for kids."
But Alice Kessler of Equality California, a gay rights organization that fought Proposition 8, argued:
When we honor civil rights leaders, we honor them for their public service, not for their personal lives."
Both sides are hoping the governor will see things their way. He has received 100,000 e-mails, calls and letters, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar bill last year, but since then Sean Penn got an Oscar for his role as Milk, President Barack Obama awarded Milk a posthumous Medal of Freedom, and the governor announced that Milk would be inducted into the California Hall of Fame this year.
So which way will he go?
State Senator Mark Leno, the San Francisco Democrat who authored the bill, told the Times:
If there's one thing Arnold Schwarzenegger understands, it's box office. And Harvey Milk now has box office."
That's showbiz. Er, politics.

Why should there be a day for a guy because he was gay? Just what the hell do he do other than that?
A SEXUAL PREDATOR OF TEENS
Randy Shilts, a homosexual San Francisco Chronicle reporter, wrote a favorable and sordid biography of Milk in "The Mayor of Castro Street." The 1982 book detailed Milk's sexual relationships with a 16-year-old, a 19-year-old and other young men:
"...sixteen-year-old McKinley was looking for some kind of father figure...At 33, Milk was launching a new life, though he could hardly have imagined the unlikely direction toward which his new lover would pull him." (pages 30-31)
MaxVeritas,
Shut up! Show him the same kind of sympathy your crowd was begging we give Mary Kay Letourneau!
And 16 is the age Joseph shagged Mary. Hardly a "predatory" age.
Go back into your little cave out in Utah and drag along a copy of Judith Levine's book "Harmful to Minors", while you're at it!
Gay activists are like selfish infants. They blubber & yell when they don't get what they want. If the public votes and says no to their request, they blubber louder. It's absurd and pathetic that they want to be considered to be "just like everyone else" when they routinely do "things" that gross out most people. To them, a man having oral sex with a woman is gross. They tolerate us and we tolerate them. Gay people are always grasping for something more, like children for a new toy.. But, WHAT have they done to deserve it.Time to grow up & accept who you are make yourself happy without forcing US to make you happy.
