Lauren Conrad did her part to clean California beaches -- and to promote her new clothing line at Kohl's, of course -- by grabbing a shopping bag and literally picking up trash at Santa Monica Beach on Saturday morning.
September 19 was International Coastal Cleanup Day. California has distinguished its effort as "the largest garbage collection" in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. More than 800,000 peoplehave removed more than 13 million pounds of debris from Golden State shorelines and coast since the cleanup program started in 1985.
During the 2008 California collection, volunteers picked up 5,236,619 cigarette butts; 1,252,749 food wrappers and containers; 1,154740 caps and lids; and 1,024070 plastic bags, according to Lynn Adams of the Pacifica Beach collection effort. All of those items pose significant hazards to wildlife.
