Over this past weekend, The Blind Side eclipsed the $200 million domestic haul mark, making Sandra Bullock the first female lead star in history to drive a movie into that territory, according to Variety.
The movie is the true story of Leigh Anne Tuohy (Bullock), a Southern housewife who takes the wayward, homeless Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) into her home and molds him into a football star. The movie has proven equally appealing to both male and female audiences, a rare feat indeed for a female-driven film.
Bullock's role as Tuohy is garnering Oscar buzz. The actress has been nominated in the past for Golden Globes and Screen Actor's Guild awards (for 2004's Oscar-winning Crash), but has never taken home any trophies.
Bullock has been steadily acting since 1987's Hangmen, but it was her breakout role in Speed (1994) opposite Keanu Reaves that gained her worldwide attention. Her roles in the Miss Congeniality movies (2000 and 2005) sealed the deal, making her America's official sweetheart (suck it, Julia Roberts!).
2009 was Bullock's year to shine. In addition to The Blind Side, she also starred in The Proposal with Ryan Reynolds and the hilarious Betty White. That movie has taken in over $160 million and still counting. However, all was not rosy - Bullock also produced and starred in All About Steve opposite The Hangover's Bradley Cooper, which opened to poor reviews and earned only $33 million.
