Film director Roman Polanski was arrested by Swiss police Saturday on a warrant issued 31 years ago, when he fled the United States after being convicted of unlawful sex with 13-year-old Samantha Geimer.
Authorities stopped 76-year-old Polanski when he arrived at the Zurich airport en route to the Zurich Film Festival where he was to receive a lifetime achievement award, according to a New York Times report. Authorities detained the director and are preparing to extradite him to the U.S.
Polanski was charged in 1978 of luring Geimer into Jack Nicholson's home, plying her with drugs, and then having sex with her. She has since publicly forgiven him.
Polanski tried last year to get the case dismissed based on “a pattern of misconduct and improper communications” among Los Angeles officials, but the court denied his request, saying he would have to return to the U.S. before his case could be reviewed.
The U.S. Department of Justice has not yet commented on the case, but in an accidentally leaked internal memo, an Associated Press reporter theorized that Swiss officials ordered Polanksi's arrest after all these years because "they're under intense pressure over UBS and want to throw the U.S. a bone."

It's not "having s/x" when you drug a child and then assault them. Hello! Why is the press trying so hard to white wash what he did?? He drugged and intoxicated a child and then assaulted her gruesomely. There was no consent and she was a child. Use the R word not the S word (not sure it will post if I do here, but you know what it really was). Bobby, Samantha did testify that Polanski asked her if she was on the pill as well as when her last period was. The testimony was released a number of months ago and is now available to the public. Issues with this: 1)the release of such statements can often be re-victimizing for a victim/survivor of assault, 2)this _is_ court testimony, why are you scared and fighting this?
Peter, even if (although I clearly don't believe you) she did consent to sex for a modeling job, let's look at the facts of that. 1)Sex for trade, financial or otherwise is prostitution. Prositution is the buying and selling of human beings. Prostitution is slavery, morally/ethically wrong, and illegal. 2)She was 13! She legally and emotionally could _not_ consent to sex even if she "wanted to." 3)If a 13yr old is having sex to advance her career (child abuse! sexual abuse!) she's not a whore, she's an abuse victim who is confused and needs healthy support and guidance.

Polanski was a dirty man, now a dirty old man. Every girl's nightmare, "the casting couch." Yet without making excuses for him, should his brilliant and talented filmmaking that has helped bring wonderful things to this tragic world, be taken into account here? I dont know.
