Paris Hilton, Jordin Sparks defend Jonas Brothers' virginity

Host Russell Brand — who has said he is a recovered sex addict — misjudged the crowd when he made fun of the Jonas Brothers' pledge to remain abstinent until they are married. The virgin jokes fell rather flat, but for some reason Russell kept on hacking away at it.

Paris Hilton — who certainly hasn't been saving her virginity for marriage — talked to Us about the Jonas Brothers' virginity after the VMAs.

"That's something cool for a kid to keep, so don't pick on them for that. ... I think that they're all really good kids ... so I think that's awesome," she said.

Jordin Sparks, who also wears a ring like the Jonas Brothers, gave the crowd a piece of her mind when she introduced T.I. during the show.

"I just wanna say, it's not bad to wear a promise ring because not every guy and a girl wants to be a slut, OK?" she told the audience. They cheered.

I don't think Russell misjudged the crowd, I just think he said what he thought, he's a good comedian trying to break a new continent, all the best comedians hae to be repared to offend someone

Thanks for your thought, Sam. You're right, of course. Every comedian has to be prepared to offend some people. But Russell's misjudgment had to do with digging in at the plate and pounding the same kinds of remarks over and over -- despite the fact that he wasn't really getting many laughs. This won't hurt his career as a comic, but it probably will take him off the short list for host spots here in America.
