Adam Lambert's raunchy American Music Awards YouTube video went viral, but Dick Clark Productions staked a copyright claim and took them all down. Well, almost all of them. A few are still circulating under other code names, for a while anyway. (See video below.)
According to the New York Post, AMA show producers said some of Lambert's moves, particularly the simulated oral sex, were not rehearsed ahead of time:
Due to the live nature of the show we did not expect the impromptu moment in question."
Lambert admitted that he improvised some of the moves. He told Rolling Stone:
Adrenaline is crazy and sometimes things just happen. ...
We had this great dance number totally staged. It's a sexy song about seduction and power and I was just doing the lyrics justice. My intention was not to try and create a controversy. But if a controversy ensues, then so be it."
Just like Madonna never meant to create any controversy, right? Controversy = money in the bank. Everybody knows that.
Even before the "impromptu" moment was edited out of the West Coast broadcast, Lambert told Rolling Stone he hadn’t crossed any lines female performers haven’t already crossed on TV, and therefore if ABC cut any part of his performance for the West Coast broadcast it would be “discrimination.”
Ironically, many viewers felt Lambert could have used a lot more discrimination himself. But he disagreed, telling Rolling Stone:
There’s a double standard going on in the entertainment community right now. Female performers have been doing this for years — pushing the envelope about sexuality — and the minute a man does it, everybody freaks out. We’re in 2009; it’s time to take risks, be a little more brave, time to open people’s eyes and if it offends them, then maybe I’m not for them. My goal was not to p*ss people off, it was to promote freedom of expression and artistic freedom.”
Lambert's comparison amounted to apples and oranges. The sexy girl stuff to which he referred was broadcast on MTV -- cable -- which is held to a different set of standards than network television, by both the FCC and the viewing public. But it doesn't really matter. He knew exactly what he was doing. He was defining himself and his audience. Now all he has to do is keep everybody satisifed. No pun intended.
Here's a video of Adam Lambert's AMA performance, while it lasts:

Comments
What a sick performance. He is absolutely discusting.
I just watched that video for the first time. Considering all of the hype and "controversy", I expected it to be more racy. Even the kiss wasn't as aggressive as people have been making it out to be. On that respect I think this whole thing was blown out of proportion.
And since I'm on my soap box, I expected Adam's vocal performance to be better. He sounded pretty bad. I expected better from him. The song was pretty lame too.
I think this is totally disgusting. Not because of the homosexual content, but because of the strong sexual content. It's porn and shouldn't have been allowed on public T.V.. Little kids were watching this.
I also think that Adam's vocal performance was awful.
IF this was unexpected, then people just didn't get what Adam is all about. I wasn't crazy about his vocals - he's better than that song, but as far as the performance went, it was, well...the Adam I expected to see. If you don't want to watch it, turn off the TV sets or don't go to a website that has the video. I thought it was refreshing to see something finally so uncensored and done so tongue in cheek (so to speak).
That was LAME! He's a total KOOK!
That was so gay
I thought it was sexy and entertaining. He's true to himself and won't let society limit what he wants in a performance. I do think that his singing could've been better, but it must be hard running around there and singing at the same time. Go Adam! Don't stop what you're doing! I want to see a repeat of this at your concert! There will be more people that love you then hate you and besides, those who mind don't matter.
People don't like over the top, it was a little scary, he got everything going for himself, why does he take such a chance with a new start, I loved him from the beginning, being gay doesn't have anything to do with it, being on the dark side is scary
I don't know what the fuss is.....He's right,I have seen alot worse and yea,Madonna & Brit and Madonna using christian material is a heck of alot worse than what Adam did,He's true to himself...so what if he's gay,I ain't gonna sleep with him so why would I give a dang.I am shocked at the ruckus over his Ama act.he didn't hide it like other's who hid their sexuality for years after they's already made it big and and made the money first before telling their sexuality,I think he's brave as heck to show us who he is RIGHT UP FRONT! KNOWING IT COULD MAKE OR BREAK HIM.HE AIN'T 2 FACED! Give him credit and i am not yelling, just emphasizing! But I am a Granma and Lordy be,I love him todeath!!
Porn?? Oh for God's Sake!!
Anyone with kids would totally understand his act was too much for such a board audience. My business partner is gay and he agrees 100%.
