At the ripe old age of 39, Matt Damon has been honored with a lifetime achievement award for his body of work from American Cinematheque.
This year marks the 24th anniversary of this honor, with past recipients including: Julia Roberts, Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, and Jodie Foster. The American Cinematheque Award is presented as a recognition of contributions to the art form. As in recent years, Damon's banquet will be turned into a television broadcast to be aired at a later date.
Damon was joined by a slew of actors, friends and family, many giving personal tributes to the actor. Much was made about the fact that Damon is so young to be receiving such an honor. EW reported that childhood friend and co-star, Ben Affleck, roasted his buddy by saying, "Wow! A lifetime achievement award? I started the same time as the guy - so it's a special night for me too. I actually accepted an award recently as well from the Elks Lodge!" Some of the other actors joining in to pay tribute to Damon were Robin Williams, Casey Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Clint Eastwood.
Damon began his career with a small part in the 1988 drama, Mystic Pizza. From there, Damon secured roles in films such as School Ties, Courage Under Fire, Chasing Amy and most recently, Green Zone. In 1998, along with Affleck, Damon won an Academy Award for co-writing the film Good Will Hunting.
Damon has enjoyed a steady career in film, never having gone more than a year without releasing a feature film since 1995. He also cemented himself as an action star with the immensely popular 'Bourne' films. Damon shows no signs of stopping as he has at least a half a dozen projects in the can or in pre-production.
