The 2010 Peabody Awards recipients were announced today. Glee and Modern Family are among a list of both entertainment and news programming recognized for achievement and service in electronic media (radio, TV, cable).
The Peabody Awards go back to the 1940's, with television first receiving awards in 1948. According to the Peabody Award website, over 1,000 entries are received each year and the number of awards given out is subject to change.
Some of the past winners have included popular TV shows such as The Sopranos, 30 Rock, The Simpsons and the television mini-series, Roots.
The Late Show with Craig Ferguson and HBO also picked up awards. HBO was recognized three times for In Treatment, Thrilla in Manila and No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.
Glee has come onto the scene this television season with a vengeance. Not afraid to tackle issues dealing with race or sexual orientation, the Ryan Murphy-created series has developed a cult following. Along with the show's newcomers, Chicago's own Jane Lynch has become a household name.
Modern Family has helped to revive the family comedy for broadcast television. It's pairing of veteran comedians and relatively new actors has proven a winning combination for this successful ABC sitcom.
