Melanie Ho Ken is a local makeup artist with a rap sheet that includes Vancouver Fashion Week, the Leo Awards Fashion Show & Gala, Make Up For Ever, Annabelle Cosmetics and both commercial and event work with Virgin Radio. She was a natural go-to for feedback from last night's Golden Globes.
Some of Melanie's top picks of the evening:
Mo'Nique - "LOVED her makeup, but then again, she works with Sam Fine...who arches a brow like nobody's business. By the looks of her makeup tonight, I'll be she worked with him again. Stunning."
January Jones - "The only one to try something new and fresh on the red carpet. I loved her retro hairband and red lipstick. Finally, somebody is wearing makeup!" Side note: Reportedly January does not use a stylist!
Christina Aguilera - "Dress was nothing spectacular, but her makeup artist definitely perfected the dewy glow. Lovely makeup, Christina! PS - I cannot wait to see Burlesque!"
Helen Mirren - "Proof that sexy has no age limits!"
Zoe Saldana - "The soft ringlets and feminine winged eyeliner were one of my favourite hair/makeup combos of the night."
The Glee girls:
Lea Michele - "I had big expectations for her tonight. I love her show. I love her. I ADORED her look tonight. Perfect balance of sophistication and youth."
Dianna Agron & Jayma Mays - "I didn't get a good look apart from when the Glee cast went up to accept their much deserved award, but I loved what I saw!"
And tops goes to...
Sandra Bullock - "I loved that she broke free from the standard red, black and pale pink dresses and busted out the shocking purple! Best eye makeup of the night. Well done!"
... and les Faux-Pas:
Toni Collette - "Two words: Oompa. Loompa. Horrible. Why in the world was her hair the same colour as her skin?"
Cameron Diaz - "One of the worst looks of the night...her dress, makeup and hair were all too severe. She looks better in more natural makeup...the red lips tend to conjure images of Jack Nicholson as The Joker".
Felicity Huffman - "I'm all for interesting juxtapositions in fashion and beauty, but her ethereal dress did not work with her harsh eye makeup and dark disco queen lip gloss at all."
Drew Barrymore - "When I finally pried my eyes off the Chia Pet on her shoulder, I just saw hair that was too flat to her head and uninspired makeup."
Jennifer Aniston - "No. No. NO. She cannot pull off a smoky eye. I'm tired of her "beachy hair". She bores me."
And the biggest catastrophe of the night...
Tina Fey - "Where is your makeup? Worst of the night by a mile."
Melanie's thoughts on Nicole Kidman and "Powdergate"
"Her dress was a gorgeous colour that flattered her fair complexion...I did notice she was a little bit on the shiny side...were the lights that bright or was she afraid to powder her nose after Powdergate"
There's nothing like a guy dishing on the red carpet attire, so Aaron offered up his 2 cents on Julianna Margulies... He's not cut out for a job on Project Runway just yet.
"Did Star Trek sell off their surplus costumes to make her dress?"

The Randoms from the Golden Globes:
According to US Weekly, Kevin Bacon tipped $10 at an open bar.
Olivia Wilde will be auctioning off the Gucci dress to raise money for Haiti. Tiffany & Co. supplied her jewellery and will be donating $10,000. Meryl Streep, Amy Poehler, Gerard Butler and Josh Brolin will also be auctioning off their red carpet attire. Bidding will begin early this week through Ebay. Proceeds will go to Artists for Peace and Justice a group that has been funding hospitals, schools and orphanages in Haiti for the past year.
With three minutes to showtime, a voice on the overhead speaker said to "take your seats and settle down." Hmm, it's like dealing with children.
