Caressa Cameron is the latest winner of the Miss America pageant.
A 22-year-old beauty and broadcast journalism student from Virginia, Caressa Cameron hopes to earn a master's degree and ultimately become a news anchor. Cameron's plans are to travel for the next year and raise money for charity while carrying the Miss America crown.
Caressa Cameron, once believing that her only talent was singing, hopes to "gain inspiration . . . gain momentum . . . and shoot through the moon," as she told The Associated Press.
On Saturday night, Caressa Cameron won the Miss America title plus a $50,000 scholarship. The African-American beauty queen sang Beyonce's "Listen" from the "Dreamgirls" movie, and advised parents to help their children avoid childhood obesity by keeping them active and exploring what the world has to offer.
Caressa Cameron's platform issue is AIDS awareness. Cameron says it's "personal" for her because her uncle died of AIDS and her family also fostered a young girl with the disease.
First runner-up was Miss California, Kristy Cavinder, who won $25,000 for her ranking. The Miss America pageant was aired live on TLC Saturday night and was hosted by actor Mario Lopez and TLC's very own Clinton Kelly of "What Not to Wear."
More on Caressa Cameron and the Miss America pageant can be read about in The Providence Journal.
