Sister Mary Scullion, RSM, Time Magazine 2009
At The Examiner, we take pride in our "Celebrity Headlines", but sometimes celebrities are more famous for what they do, not who they are.
For example, Sister Mary Scullion, who co-founded Project H.O.M.E. (Housing, Opportunities for Employment, Medical Care, Education), a non-profit organization determined to stop homelessness in and around Philadelphia, is more of a role model than any other celebrity the world has seen.
Sister Mary Scullion, RSM, is actually a fellow alumnus from Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls and was a classmate of my mother’s. From an early age, she dedicated her life to helping the homeless.
Throughout the years she has dedicated her life and vocation to clean up the streets of Philadelphia and provide the best possible chance for homeless people to get the help they need and the opportunity for advancement.
Scullion has been honored by such elite dignitaries like Bill Clinton. Earlier this year, she was honored by Time Magazine as part of their “100 World's Most Influential People” and to her credit she was responsible for cleaning up the Philadelphia streets to a mere 200 homeless people in 2000.
Project H.O.M.E. has also partnered with mega-star Jon Bon Jovi to build more homes within the

About Project H.O.M.E.:
“In 1989, Sister Mary Scullion and Joan Dawson McConnon co-founded Project H.O.M.E., a nationally recognized organization that provides supportive housing, employment, education and health care to enable chronically homeless and low-income persons to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty. Under their leadership, Project H.O.M.E has grown from an emergency winter shelter to 447 units of housing and three businesses that provide employment to formerly homeless persons. Project H.O.M.E. also prevents homelessness in a low-income neighborhood in North Central Philadelphia. This initiative includes greening vacant lots, economic development, home ownership for the working poor, and the Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs—a 38,000 square foot, state-of-the-art center that offers comprehensive educational and occupational programming. To date, Project H.O.M.E. has leveraged over $50,000,000 in equity towards housing and economic development.”

I read about this when she was on the cover of a magazine with Jon Bonjovi, but I didn't know she went to LF. I always learn something new with your articles.
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Finally, a story that is inspiring, educational, and worth while. I encourage everyone to contact Sister Mary Scullion and Project Home. Sister Mary has dedicated her life to this cause. What have each one of you done???? A few precious dollars or a few precious hours can't hurt any one of you!!!!! Especially, the young ones. Skip a night/a few dollars at the bar!!!!
