The love of awards shows intensifies as it gets closer and closer to the Oscars, the Golden Globes, the Grammy Awards, and the Screen Actor’s Guild, and the American Music Awards should be a night filled with music and performances that rock the night away…but it just wasn’t that entertaining this year.
Granted, there were performances that KILLED the competition. Janet Jackson started the evening with a bang. Lady Gaga and her “Bad Romance” performance were spectacular, as well as the Black Eyed Peas performance, but the rest of the night, the live performances were pretty lackluster.
Eminem and 50 cent had to be censored to the point it wasn’t worth listening to, Timbaland was just mediocre, and this Examiner loves her some Timberland, even Green Day failed to raise the energy level. Rhianna didn’t bring it and even Carrie Underwood was pretty mediocre tonight (even though she did look fabulous).
The performances weren’t the only boring part; the presenters weren’t all that excited either. Celebrities like Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Christian Slater, and Samuel L. Jackson joined a plethora of musical presenters, and all but Samuel L. Jackson, who presented Whitney Houston’s award, seemed to lack something tonight.
Whitney Houston received the International Award and it was the classic comeback. She looked amazing and killed her performance of “I Didn’t Know my own Strength”. Girl can sing.
And of course the underlying theme was Michael Jackson. He did score some awards tonight posthumously, and were received by his brother Jermaine, who acted as the family spokesperson.
And Taylor Swift was the jewel of the awards, as she should be, winning artist of the year.
