Gang Starr rapper Guru has died from "cancer-related causes" at the age of 43.

The rapper called "Guru" (real name, Keith Elam) passed away on Monday in a coma, after a "long fight" with the disease.

MTV.com reports Guru's friend and partner Producer Solar released a statement shortly after Guru's death, lamenting the world's loss for "one of the best MC's...and icons of all time".

"My loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru," Solar said. "Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius."

In the dedicated report by Solar, it was also mentioned that Guru left a letter to his fans that should be released after his death. Of the many requests regarding his fans, albums and non-profit organization, Each One Counts, Guru also allegedly did not want his Gang Starr team member DJ Premier to participate in any events or funeral arrangements post-death.

While the singer suffered cardiac arrest in March of this year, the two incidents appear to be unrelated after a full recovery from surgery. Fans immediately took to their Twitter accounts to leave notes of tribute.

One fan wrote, "RIP Guru. Your legacy will live on," while another fan personalized the traditional phrase of "Rest in Peace" by saying, "Guru...Rest in Beats!" (Video below)

R.IP.,the Guru will be missed. My heart goes out to his family, especially his son.Besides being a entertainer,he was a father, friend, man and Our Father God creation-Human.He showed bravery when he wrote that last letter and kept it true and real to the end, thats what being a man is all about. He showed us that money and fame is secondary,he was true to his Muslim beliefs.
