Could 'American Idol' producers be responsible for Alex Lambert's premature ousting by making his switch songs?

Are Idol producers responsible for Alex Lambert’s early ousting?
Guest post by: Jessica Bongiorno
When Alex Lambert was asked why he chose to sing “Trouble” last week in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he replied, “I had another song in mind: “Let Me Love You” by Mario. It’s an R&B song, but I was going to change it up and make it my own. But it was a song a lot of people didn’t know so I went with my second choice because one of the producers was telling me, “If you do this song, you’ll get more votes.” But obviously I didn’t get enough. I wish I would’ve done the other song. I wish I didn’t listen to the producer. But I still feel like, vocally, the song I sang, I didn’t think it was bad enough for me to go home, but it is what it is.”
A few days later, he took the opportunity to give us a taste of what his gut was telling him all along, by singing his version of Mario’s “Let Me Love You” during his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (video below). To say America loved Lambert's performance is an understatement. Comments started pouring in on the Ellen video all over the web, and the opinion was universal across the board: “WHY DIDN’T ALEX SING THIS ON IDOL!?”
It’s no wonder Tim Urban sailed through with the younger voting crowd. Even the Idol fans that were rooting for pretty face, Urban, have been commenting that Alex's version of "Let Me Love You" was a thousand times better than what he DID sing! While “Trouble” was a perfect fit for Alex’s tone of voice, it’s more in the adult contemporary genre, and “Let Me Love You” would have been a hit with viewers, being that its current and appeals to his demographic. Go ask a 14yr old if they even know who Ray LaMontagne is, and then ask the same 14 year old about Mario. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the response. After seeing how much positive feedback he received on the internet for his performance on Ellen, a large majority of this feedback coming from the younger voters; I have no doubt that he could still be there as you read this.
Let Me Love You is a well-known R&B song that Lambert added a slight twist to by covering it acoustically, and that innovation and creativity is exactly what American Idol preaches about in what they want to see on the show! His take on the song made people everywhere immediately fall in love… all over again, mind you. Here he is, a 19 year old inexperienced singer that found himself on one of the world’s BIGGEST television shows to date, trying to do everything possible to do make America proud while not throwing up in the process, and what do you expect?
Viewer Beth Hart writes, “He’s standing before someone he believes is a very experienced knowledgeable entertainment producer, who knows what audiences want, and they tell him that he’d get more votes if he takes their advice and doesn't perform the song he wants to! What the heck does he know? Why would he do anything other than pick the song, this "Expert" says, will get more votes! That would be like ignoring my stock broker after he advises me to sell GE cause the numbers he’s seeing are indicating they’re going to file bankruptcy. I'd be an idiot not to!”
It looks as though whatever Idol producer gave “Trouble” to him as a “you’ll get more votes” suggestion, didn’t have the slightest clue what they were doing. Or did they? It’s hard to believe that after having a highly successful nine season run, the producers DON’T know what they are doing at this point. So, why the push to switch songs? Not only did Alex mention his love of the original choice while on Ellen, but it was obvious how comfortable he was singing it, and that’s a clear point to the type of artist he could see himself being. Even I still catch myself humming back his Ellen performance, and I’m a die-hard LaMontagne fan. Now, not only is he prematurely gone, but we’re left with a mediocre show, at best, and Alex wishing he never listened to the producer. Way to go Idol! I guess America’s opinion doesn’t matter if it doesn’t match up with what you already have in mind. Not exactly an opinion anymore, is it?
With the ever growing fan petition (currently on it’s way to almost 18,000 signatures) circling the web for Alex Lambert to be reinstated on the show, the statistic downfall in this season’s ratings, and a lack of talent in over half of the remaining contestants… the media is now starting to realize what a serious error this was on Idol’s part, and people can’t help but wonder, will American Idol producers listen to the almost 18,000 fans and bring Lambert back?
Another viewer over on Idol’s message boards asks, “Had Ryan stood up there with that heartbroken boy, and asked him on camera why he chose "Trouble", and Alex stated before 22 million viewers, "Well I wanted to do a Mario song that was more me, but one of the producers told me "If you do this song, you'll get more votes…" Can you imagine just how unfair that would look?? Once people realize their favorite Idols aren't picking their songs, but are being criticized by the judges for picking them in front of millions, and going down for them, what are they going to do?”
Alex Lambert's performance on Ellen does make Tim’s Hallelujah performance look older and less relevant, so, naturally its making people wonder if he could have taken Tim’s votes, and that could spell trouble.
American Idol fans, please take action. Let Fox hear your voice!
Please be sure to sign the petition, here, to demand Alex Lambert come back to Idol.

Fox is seriously insane if they dont start acknowledging all of the media and attention they and Alex are getting for his early ousting. Bring him back fox...and then let HIM spread his wings and grow into the incredible artist he could be. BRING HIM BACK!
Yes, of course they were responsible...Year after year they do this type of thing but now it has had dire consequences, causing distrust of their own show and principles. I think there is one way to right this bad call and that is by reinstating Alex Lambert and allowing the public to make the final judgement, although it seems to me by the amazing amout of support he has garnered that they already have! Let America's voice be heard, Bring Back Alex!!! Please Alex supporters, let your voices be known, tweet, post, sign and then do it again...
I stopped watching after Alex left. There's no point anymore. More than half the people in this top 12 don't even deserve to be there based on vocals. Alex could have saved this season, Fox. Way to go and screw yourselves.
WOW, after all the drama this week, now we learn of THIS?? An American Idol PRODUCER advising Alex Lambert to sing a song (Trouble) he didn't want to sing?! I can definitely see how it contributed to him LOSING VOTES, not to mention all the votes that went to Tim & Paige due to evil websites like votefortheworst.com, whose sole goal is to sabotage the show. The Mario "Let me love you" song was more popular w/ his teen demographic and would have helped him get more votes. Check YouTube, Twitter & you'll see all the positive comments and 5-star ratings. Really, American Idol & FOX?? Is this how you wanted to go out? You could have gone out on the top, but instead, you are choosing to go out on the bottom. You are damaging your own brand by ignoring this. Us loyal (7 yrs for me) fans love (or loved) AI and it'd be a WIN-WIN situation. I did not watch AI this week. It was tough canceling the series recording on my DVR, but I did it for a young man w/ a voice of GOLD: Alex Lambert.
I don't know what sort of musical experts the producers of American Idol are, but they told Alex that people did not know the Mario song, and therefore they would get fewer votes. Well, curious as that is, Ray LaMontagne is an INDIE artist, and predominately listened to by ADULTS! So if the core group of voters are tweens, who listen to the Billboard Pop Charts are the ones that have the most influence in the votes. THOSE TWEENS and YOUNG VIEWERS KNOW MARIO!!! They have never heard of Ray Lamontagne, I would assume. So WHY, would producers of a music show, TELL a contestant to sing a song that would CLEARLY be less innovative, and obvisouly more geared for the adult audience, if they were not trying to sabotage his chances of staying on the show?!
I have never seen such anger and controversy over a semi-finalist being eliminated on American Idol. Of course, there has been backlash over Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry's eliminations, but those happened in the finals. It does seem unfair that the producers interfered with Alex's original song choice. If the song was cleared by the legal department, then Alex should have performed the Mario song. I don't think Idol producers should give suggestions to any contestants because that could be interpreted as either favoritism or sabotage! Alex was robbed and deserved to be in the top 12. Idol producers should be ashamed of what they did to Alex.
Maybe I'm alone here, but I really truly loved Alex's version of "Trouble." I thought it was a beautiful song and he seemed really connected to it. I also loved the Mario song on Ellen, but I'm not entirely convinced he got voted off because of the song. That said, I'm still completely devastated he DID get voted off, and I didn't watch the show this week and won't watch it ever again. I said the same thing after Kris Allen won last year, after the whole Arkansas voting fiasco, and Idol's refusal to throw those unfair votes out. I started watching this season anyway, and now that Alex has left entirely too early, I can honestly say that I am officially done with Idol. Good riddance.
The recommendation to sing "Trouble" over the Mario song was odd. Younger contestants are criticized by the judges all the time for picking songs that are too old for them. It's pretty hard to believe a 19-year-old has been "saved" by a woman. Not hard to believe he's standing on the sidelines hoping a girl will give him a chance. Also, it's usually a bad idea to sing a song that's firmly associated with a popular Idol contestant. "Trouble" invites comparisons to Taylor Hicks by a number of his fans, while the Mario song doesn't have any baggage. Lastly, I remember reading that Clive Davis disapproved of Taylor Hicks choosing "Trouble" in the first place, because he felt it was too negative and depressing for the audience. The Mario song seems to fit better with the other songs Alex picked, although I thought he sang "Trouble" well.
Wow, this is actually quite a big wrong doing on this producers part.. It brings up a larger issue you touched on. If judges are going to critique contestants on their song choice, and Idol Producers really want to help contestants choose songs that help them earn the most votes. Then rather than outright telling them which song will get more votes, wouldnt the more appropriate way to go about guiding them be to just describe who that contestants voters are to them, then help them elevate and make their the song they choose based on their gut feeling? Then the song they felt best speaks to their audience, while still portraying who they are, is truly and completely all their own, and the criticism of their choice is justified
The next time I see a judge criticism one of these kids for song choice it going to infuriate me to no end! Knowing this, bringing him back doesn't really bug me so much, it's probably the right the to do.
err sorry, doing too many things at once. that was suppose to read - then help them elevate and make the best out of the song they chose based on their gut feeling?
I have to say I was a 100 percent Casey fan when the season started and was watching for him. But when I saw and heard Alex sing "wonderful world" he stole my heart. Sure it was obvious he was nervous, but hearing him talk to the judges and seeing his sincerity and sweetness won me over. And his vocals weren't bad at all just his stage presence was shaky. (nothing a few more weeks wouldn't cure.)
I was shocked and devastated when he was eliminated. After last season was so stressful, I swore I wouldn't get so invested again, but one week and Alex won me over: then insult to injury some bone head producer suggests to a 19yr old to sing a song associated with Taylor hicks....they by no means have the same audience. The judges are constantly saying "be young, be current' well the Mario song is young and current. I didn't have to hear him sing it on Ellen first to know that was clearly the better song choice. Contestants should be allowed to follow their gut, its THEIR song choice. I hav
There is just so much wrong with Alex Lambert being voted off of AI. Now people are finding out the producers pushing him into the wrong song choice, just adds fuel to the the existing outrage of him being voted off. I thought the producers were there to help the contestants, not sabotage them.
To be honest I loved the way Alex sang trouble. I just love his voice no matter what he sings.
I watched him on Ellen's show when he sang let me love you by Mario and it was also beautiful. I just really do not understand why he was voted off unless the fact that the night that the guys were singing fox lost signal and the votes didn't get through like they should have. I was so angry that night, not to mention the next night about falling out of my chair when he had to leave. It really made me sick and had no interest in watching the show anymore. I would pay him just to record a few songs just so I could listen to him. I know maybe I sound like a love sick teeny bopper here but let me tell you that is far from the case here, I am a 49 year old woman that knows talent when I see it. I know I am not the only one that feels that way. I really hope he gets a shot from someone that recognizes his talent
and he records an album, I would definitely buy it!
That's messed up! I don't think there's any question the Mario song would have appealed more to his potential voters. It's pretty crummy they told him that.
Questions of the day - Should Idol contestants be criticized for their song choice, if Producers are leaning on their decisions with statements like if you do this song youll get more votes? And, How would you feel if an AI Producer persuaded your favorite Idol to perform a song that resulted in their departure?
I'd be SOOO ticked if this happened to crystal!!
What is wrong with fox. I thought they would want viewers. The more I hear about this show, the more disappointed I become with it. Why would the producers encourange Alex Lambert to make a such poor song choice, knowing a lot of the voters are teens. Fox wake up and bring Alex Lambert back. This dude had real talent.
It's sounds to me like Fox wanted to sabotage Alex Lambert. Producers pushing him into the wrong song choice. Why did they do that? Also I have watched AI, read message boards, checked polls and looked at Vote Idol since season 2. Everything I read said he shouldn't have gone home that night. Never have I seen this much outrage over a contestant being voted off. Also I have never seen where someone was in the top 3 on Dial Idol 1 and them going home. Alex Lambert was number 2 the night he was voted off. I know Dial Idol 1 doesn't count texted votes, but still something just wasn't right. I have never been big on conspiracy therious, but I'm beginning to wonder about fox.
I Saw this headline in my sidebar, and immediately I thought, I wonder if this is about the producer conspiracies floating around. I must admit whether this has anything to do with that or not, it really does look bad for Idol Producers. As I was reading it, the judges criticism that everyone replayed the day after his elimination started running through my head. Didn't Randy take issue with the song, saying he felt he could have done more with it. And then Kara said something like He was thing standing in way of him winning, and went on that she wanted just him, an acoustic guitar and him singing, vulnerability, or something like that?? & Randy chimed in yeah that would have been even better! Well, isn't that exactly what he said he wanted to do, and did with the Mario song. So who was REALLY standing in the way of him winning, himself or an Idol producer? The Judges own criticism of his performance is the strongest case for his return..
I too have given up on AI since Alex was ousted. He had the best vocals on there by far and the mediocre talent left isn't worth my time. I want him back on there as much as anyone, but not if they are going to treat him badly -- and we all know how nasty they can get with contestants if they don't want them there. Plus, now the other contestants already will have several weeks of experience on him and that is where he was lacking to begin with. Their fanbases have also had weeks to grow. So....I'm concerned for him and not sure what is best at this point but I really really really want to hear more from him (playing the same 4 songs over and over right now!), and he can sing the phone book if he wants -- I'll listen as his voice is so wonderful....and very mature for his age in my opinion.

It's obvious that the producers already had Alex penned OUT of AI for the top 12... which explains the persuasion to sing Trouble as opposed to his original intention of Let Me Love You.
The show is rigged, they know from the start who they will polish up for the title of American Idol. We only know what they tell us, when they say a contestant had the lowest number of votes. I cannot believe that when I could not get through on Alex's line the whole 2 hours...I got not 1 vote in. Imagine that!
Why did the producer have to intervene? Is he getting a good night's sleep? Don't think so. Alex is amazing and there were so many mistakes made in the process. Why does he and all of us have to pay for them? FOX needs to take responsibility for the mistakes they made by bringing him back, by changing that voting system, by making things right. I have followed Idol from the beggining and I honestly feel devastated now.
The issue of Alex's song choice is one of many things that have puzzled me about his elimination. One of the things that drew me to him as a contestant was his taste in song choices. I had never heard of James Morrison before Top 24 night and now, thanks to Alex, I own both of his albums. While I knew who John Legend was, I had never heard Everybody Knows - and I now own that album - sales of the orig. song were up 2938% after Alex sang it. So when Simon made the remark about wishing HE could pick Alex's songs, I didn't agree at all. I don't know if that critique made Alex doubt his choice when the producer wanted him to sing Trouble, but I am sure it didn't help.
In Season 7, Nigel Lythgoe wanted David Cook to do Addicted to Love instead of Hello. We all know what we would have missed if David Cook, who was older & experienced hadn't stuck to his guns. They were really pushing for Archuleta.
FWIW, my tween children definitely like Alex's version of Let Me Love You more than Trou

I'm still so sad Alex was voted off - and now I read that the reason he sang his "second choice" song last week was because a producer recommended it. With such conflicting criticism and "advice" from the judges this year, which is many times about the song choice, how could a producer even make a suggestion on song choice? Especially to sway Alex from a song that would have been WILDLY popular with the voting population? How can American Idol be falling apart so quickly this year? I've been a fan from the beginning, but this year is killing it for me - Alex leaving, so many weak contestants left, judges acting weird (except Ellen - I love her!). I'm hoping AI is considering doing something with the suggestion to bring Alex back, as I've been reading so much about since last week. I hope AI is savvy enough to know they MUST do something like that to try and reel in those fans they've been losing this year. BRING ALEX BACK!!
this really unfair alex lambert is one of the best . he had the best voice and good choices in songs.i am still sad that he votted off he is million time better then tim,andrew......etc.please bring him back he really can sing.

THIS REALLY IS SUCH A SHAME. The judges go on and on about how important song choice is, how you have to show what kind of an artist you want to be, how you must sing something relevant etc etc and then a producer tells a 19 year old kid he's going to get more votes if he sings a dark song about how someone's life has been saved after years of trouble and sorrow instead of a song about a young guy hoping for a girl to give him a chance? I loved the way Alex sang "Trouble"...but I'm 46 years old. My young daughter much preferred "You should let me Love You" and was actually humming it after watching it on Ellen. She immediately connected with it. It really is such a shame because Alex has a true gift and the most potential and it would have been a joy to watch whim "ripen" on AI. Isn't AI supposed to be about discovering someone and offering them a chance? ALEX REALLY MUST BE BROUGHT BACK AS THE WILDCARD.
What also drew me to Alex was when he sang Everybody Knows because I know John Legend and the fact that he chose that song intrigued me on this Idol contestant. Then I looked up his other song choices and I learned he played James Morrison and Jason Mraz and all sang it really well. Alex knows what kind of artist he wants to be and he's choosing all the right songs. I'm not in my teens and it was actually my first time to hear Let Me Love You or Trouble yet he still sang it pretty good. He's definitely someone I'd look forward to in the future with or without AI.
Alex is a type of contestant who improves over time. I compare him to Kris Allen who was last season's dark horse. Weren't it for his steady improvement, he wouldn't have caught the viewer's/voter's attention. He was given a tepid feedback then but people still love him and vote for him to win. Kris was the only male AI winner who enters Billboard's top 10 with his LLYD. I see Alex the way I saw Kris. It's just sad that he left so soon. He shouldn't have. :-(
I think the producers are realizing their mistake now with the low ratings of the show. Alex Lambert is what the show is about, and many (myself included) are not watching the show until Alex is brought back. Alex Lambert is the next American Idol.
wow, alex seems like a shy- more on the sensitive type boy who would get talked into something easily. they should've took that into consideration before the stupid producers did what they did. Personally he should get a chance back on the show in fault of the producers.
bring alex back! this is a singing competition! anyone who thinks that all of the guys still on the show have a better voice than him is crazy..this guy has the best voice of anybody..
It's a real shame that Alex got voted off...I'm not watching this season any more unless American Idol brings him back..
Please bring him back American Idol, he's one of the few unique people on the show...and one of the most talented!
I've never been so angry as when Alex Lambert got voted off! I voted for him every week so I was extremely upset. I was yelling at the TV. When I heard him sing on Ellen I yelled at the TV and was like "Why didn't you sing this on Idol you would have stayed!!" But now I understand why he didn't sing it and I am very upset and honestly considering to stop watching the show because I don't really care for any of the other contestants. They also seem to have taken all the songs off I-tunes except the top 12 contestants, which I'm very upset about so if anyone can find them on there or somewhere else to download please let me know.

I signed the petition to bring Alex back. This 68 yr. old lady saw talent in him (my husband, also). I must say, since last year this season is rather boring. But, Alex has something extra that we're all looking for. He might not have won season 9 but he was one that had a chance. Hope the petition works.
Well, that's an eye-opener. Thanks for this article, Jessica. I hadn't thought of internal sabotage; I've been so focused on that horrid votefortheworst.com.
I also found myself singin' Alex later after his Ellen appearance, as I do all of his songs. I especially like his "You Give Me Butterflies." He needs to self-produce that and get it over to I-tunes.
Thank you, Jessica, for this article. Alex Lambert is not the one standing in the way of his winning. Thank you for shedding light on this issue. I am among the thousands who is still wondering how on earth a well-liked AI contestant such as Alex Lambert who has an unforgettable voice and who was improving consistently each week with his performances can be excluded from the top 12. IT'S A CRIME, I tell you. I usually just shrug it off when a favorite of mine gets the boot from Idol, but not this time. I'm losing sleep over this. It's just a silly tv show, for crying out loud, but Alex Lambert really got the shaft and I'm compelled to say something. FOX and AI need to rectify the Alex Lambert situation. P.S. I signed the petition to bring Alex Lambert back to AI.
Given the following two facts, it is clear that flaws in the AI voting system led to Alex's elimination.
1) Alex's busy percent (the percentage of people who got a busy signal when trying to vote) on the night of elimination was 5.2%, according to DialIdol.
This was much higher than the busy percent of all the other contestants (the male contestant with the next highest percent was Michael Lynch, with 2.8%). A high busy percent usually indicates the performer is doing well in the voting - busy percents at DialIdol have correctly predicted many past winners.
2) A university study by Jason Gershman, an assistant professor of mathematics and statistics, shows that geography (the state the performer is from) plays a huge role in how many votes the person gets: big states=high busy percent=less votes cast.
Conclusion: More people tried to vote for Alex Lambert than for any other contestant, but were not able to cast their votes because the American Idol voting system i
You all take this stupid, lame show way too seriously. Following busy signals? Sales of songs he song? Some of you need a hobby. The kid wasn't that good. I think some of you need to step away from the tv. I was actually reading one woman say she raced home on Tuesday nights and her family had to fend for themselves. Someone put me out of my misery if I every become that pathetic.
I can't sleep either. I want Alex Lambert back. I cannot stop singing his version of "Trouble" or the Mario song on Ellen or "You...give me...butterfli-iee-eez...yeah, you...give meeee...butterfliiiieez..." It's so beautiful and sweet and romantic! I want Alex Lambert back on the show; I'm so upset that he's gone. I keep crying over it and I can't sleep. He is sooooooooooooooo good, and yet he's not on that show. I agree with Oliva, in that Fox needs to own up to their mistakes and give us what we want!! What we want is ALEX LAMBERT; I don't care what Simon or Kara or Randy says, I KNOW WHAT KIND OF MUSIC I LIKE AND THAT MUSIC IS ALEX LAMBERT MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, I think Alex should totally not been kicked off the show. He is awesome and I signed the petition to get him back.
this is very interesting what Blake said. Have you read The Examiner interview with Alex about why he chose "Everybody Knows"
"I chose that song because it's a song that I usually do on ukulele and I was pretty comfortable with. I know I could play it on the guitar and had a pretty good picking pattern for it. I [also] knew I could do it without being nervous. "And it means a lot to me. That song was my favorite song for a long time because of things that were happening in my life that it really related to. I felt like I really connected to that song."
...Then think about the judges criticism, it does appear song choice was key for him, he should have never been persuaded to do Trouble! No contestant ever should!

After listening to this, I dont see where he did that great. Maybe people would have liked the son better, but his voice is still not ripened :)
"alex seems like a shy- more on the sensitive type boy who would get talked into something easily." - ashley
Ashley, I would give Alex a lot more credit than that. Anyone competing on AI who doesn't already have a career going, would NATURALLY listen to an experienced producer of a top-rated TV show that has backed very lucrative careers of past idols. Alex may be shy and sensitive, but those attributes alone do not determine whether someone is malleable, or a wimp; easily controlled.
I've known a lot of shy, sensitive people who could be assertive when needed, or as stubborn as locked doors when pushed.

I have a very serious question. I signed the petition and I would really like him to come back. But when you think about it, there are all the other contestants that got voted off and probably for better reasons but the FOX people are sadly not going to bring him back because they might believe it is unfair for all the other contestants voted off. I surely hope that is not going to be the case. So I need to ask if he were brought back on... How would it play out? Would he get voted off later and this happen again? I highly doubt that the rest of the contestants and the other viewers are going to be happy that he is back and might just start a riot for there favorite being voted off. I would really love it if he get back on, but sometimes you have to think of the others. Don't get me wrong I'm just asking s simple question and I would be happy if it is answered Raegan.rocks@hotmail.com help me out :)
OMG, the guy didn't get enough votes to stay on the show, so he should go. No petitions, no conspiracy theory. Who says he wouldn't have gotten LESS votes if he did the other song? Producers and voice coaches give lots of good advice to the contestants, but maybe some of it misses the mark. Alex Lambert didn't have the experience or confidence to insist on the song, so that's on him. Also, it's easy for him to say "I had a better song" after the fact. He sang "Trouble" very well. His fan base should have voted more and not assumed he would be safe. People should grow up. The boy got LOTS of media exposure, he was on Ellen and he now has a fan base. He has a music career of some kind ahead of him thanks to American Idol.
I've emailed Fox, called the tip line and voiced my concerns several times on ellen's site about Alex leaving..
Does anyone readlily have information on how I can email Ryan S, Kara D, Randy J, Simon C, Ken Warwick, 19 Entertainement and anyone else you can think of that needs to be targeted?
Any help with this request would be greatly appreciated. I'm not a tweeter.. Again, thanks
