The 2009 American Music Award Highlights

The 2009 American Music Awards (AMA's) provided a variety of performances and awards for music legends  and newcomers. Here is a highlight of the good, bad and ugly happenings of the AMA's. Overall, the ceremony brought a dose of  happiness, disturbia, and history for the audience and viewers.

The "King of Pop," won two AMA's  on the live taping of the show which his brother Jermaine Jackson accepted with his three sons. ( He won a total of 4 awards that night.) On the homefront it was a successful night for Nashville with Taylor Swift winning the biggest award of the night over the world's music icon Michael Jackson and a new beginning for Keith Urban and  country group Gloriana who took home their first AMAs. (Taylor Swift won 5 AMA's and made history as the youngest teen to win so many awards. She's on a roll, and I think Kanye helped boost her career quite a bit.)

AMA  Highlights

Janet Jackson brought the crowd to a standing ovation with her old hits: "Control",   "What Have you Done for Me Lately", "If", and her new single "Make Me." She ended on high note with "Together Again." ( It was a great performance for Janet. I think MJ would have been very proud of her performance.)

JANET OPENS UP AMA'S

Mary J. Blige  performed  her  new song "I am",   and everyone was happy with the much  awaited performance of the night  by Whitney Houston  when she sang "I Didn't Know My Own Strength," and was presented the International Artist Award by Samuel L. Jackson. The crowd gave her a much deserved standing ovation and we saw the emotional and spiritual Whitney we all love. It was a proud moment for Whitney as she accepted the award giving praise to God and her family. If you missed, the performance it is a must-see. Check it out here:

Whitney Houston's Performance

Another comeback of the night, was J. Lo who performed her new song "Louboutins" , and provided  the laugh of the night in falling on her behind. ( We hope she can bounce back from the incident and that Louis Vuitton doesn't lose money.)

And let us not forget, Pop princess Rihanna who had her first performance since the Chris Brown incident in January 2009. ( She will also be on Good Morning America performing at 6 AM November 24, 2009.) She always has a new look and she had a blonde mohawk type look. ( Do we like it? I don't know about this one RiRi.)  She gave a bit of a rock vibe with her new hit , "So Hard."

The craziest performances full of creativity for  the night  were provided by Lady Gaga and  American Idol runner up Adam Lambert. Lady Gaga provided breaking of glass and she even managed to set a piano on fire, while Lambert  fondled men and women onstage with his performance.  There was an intense crotch-grabbing scene that was unbelievable. (Now had this been years ago at a certain super bowl, this would have been  "CONTROVERSIAL'.. I guess it was acceptable since it was Adam Lambert.) Let's just say there were a lot of dropped jaws at the finale of the awards ceremony.

Lady Gaga hits the AMA stage hard.

The best performance of the night was provided by  New York natives rapper Jay-Z  and singer Alicia Keys , who had the crowd dancing and bobbing their heads when they performed their hit single "Empire State of Mind,"  which seems to be the new NY anthem.  Take a look here:

Other hot performances were provided by  Shakira, Black Eyed Peas, country singer Carrie Underwood and rappers Eminem and  50 cent

I hope you enjoyed my AMA highlights. I would love to hear your thoughts on the perfomances, fashion or anything else you liked or disliked about the AMAs.  Leave me your feedback via comments here.

Great article and I agree that whitney houston deserved the standing ovation. I just am sad that her voice is not what it use to be. I loved Janet jackson performance she proved that she still got it. Alicia keys is my favorite singer and I love the sleeping with a broken heart song but hated the dance moves. I agree jay z and alicia keys stole the show with my favorite song empire state of mind. great article chic keep up the good work

I read this year's AMA red carpet was neglected, and although I didn't watch the show in its entirety, I enjoyed Jay & Alicia's performance and Whitney. I also saw Taylor Swift get a few awards, I don't think she was accepting from London by mistake, big smile! ;)

Thank you for filling in the parts I missed, your review's keep getting better!

I thought Janet performance was great and she looked great also. I also liked Lady Gaga performance bc she always stepping out the box. I think overall show was good. But I do agree that it is interesting how Adam Lambert was able to do performance so "CONTROVERSIAL" , but when Janet Super Bowl incident happen it was blown way out of portion and brought to public.
