Meredith Baxter, best known as Mama Elyse Keaton on Family Ties, has opened up about being a lesbian. The actress, who says she has been dating women for seven years, came out to Matt Lauer on The Today Show in an effort to prevent the story from becoming typical tabloid fodder of speculation and rumor.
While the interview itself was a little awkward, most likely because forward-thinking people can't believe people still have to make an official sexual orientation declaration, her interview with The Advocate was more interesting. She compared realizing she was gay to getting glasses to see:
"The analogy I’ve used is a story [from] when I was a kid. I never could see very well .... When I was 12 I tried on a [friend’s] pair of glasses and I was stunned with how clearly I could see. In truth, I used to think trees looked like lollipops because there was a solid stake and this solid ball. I didn’t know most people could see leaves. Oh, this is how the world is perceived?
"That’s kind of what having that second relationship [with a woman] made me realize — that this is where I want to be because I was dead to the world in many other ways. I’ve been married three times, and I have a slew of children, but I’ve never felt that kind of connection before in that kind of awakening.
"It was very profound for me."
Surely staunch Republican Alex Keaton would not approve, but the hippy-dippy rest of the Keaton clan would be proud.

NEWS FLASH:
A white straight guy from Nebraska came out today and said *gasp* he was a white straight guy from Nebraska.
Why is it that all these dried up celebs need to stop the presses with their new groove? Like the famous organization says, move on. BTW: The current pix of you MB scream that you need your love to slather you with some product girl!
Umm...isn't that the same analogy they used on an episode of Grey's Anatomy
Gee, stereotyping a Republican, how liberal! I'm sure Alex would still be proud of his mom. In some episodes, he showed he could be open-minded. In one episode, in his advocacy for equal rights, he even proclaimed to be a woman. OK, he was doing all that for a girl. Still, it shows that when matters of the heart arise, he can set conservative mindset aside. Go Alex! Go Elyse! Elyse will always be my favourite TV mom.
Who cares. She looks like shiiit anyway.
