Halle Berry and her mother, Judith
Halle Barry has been talking about the abuse she witnessed against her mother during her childhood with the hope that it will raise awareness regarding domestic violence. Berry, who volunteers at Jenesse Center in L.A, hopes that the attention will encourage people to assist shelters as they feel the burden of the economic crunch. Earlier in the year, all funding for domestic violence shelters in California was cut in 'an effort to save tax payers money'. Guess we can make up for it with an increase in government funded funerals following the deaths of people trapped in abusive relationships with no recourse!
Fortunately, activists quickly attacked this decision and it was overturned. Still, the fact that it was even possible highlighted the lack of awareness in the state of California.
Berry was also the victim of an abusive relationship that subsequently cost her hearing damage in one of her ears following an alleged beating.
Fortunately, Berry says, she has learned in recent years to break the cycle of violence she witnessed as a child: "I did choose the wrong partners. Not always good men. Luckily, in recent years, I have been smart enough to hit the door when violence even becomes a possibility. That is something I will not tolerate."
She adds that her mother still struggles to understand why she endured the abuse for so long.
