Alexa Joel, the daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, was hospitalized yesterday following what was described as an 'overdose on medication'. Subsequently it's been confirmed that said medicine was actually an herbal medication called Traumeel, which is an alternative version of Ibuprofen. Cue massive onslaught of articles speculating that Joel at temped suicide, citing her dissatisfaction with her romantic life as conveyed by her in interviews earlier this year as the motive.
The only problem with shining a light on desperate suicide attempts? Doctors agree that it's virtually impossible to overdose on Traumeel, and that it's far more likely that the eight pills she took merely freaked her out, hence the hospital visit. And Joel has already been released from the hospital, whereas a suicide attempt it usually taken seriously and demands a hold and psych evaluation.
Despite the Post claiming to know what was on a 911 call, it seems highly unlikely that anyone would try to snuff it in such a half-assed manner. You'd have better luck swallowing a bottle aspirin.
So let's go over a more plausible, less interesting scenario: haven't you ever had a migraine and popped a million Excedrine, only to then be hit by a wave of nervous tension and nausea? Sometimes, people over-medicate when they feel ill. Overall impression: not only was there no suicide attempt, it's pretty irresponsible to watch media outlets spin into overdrive with accusations of depression.
