Former Dallas Cowboys star wide receiver and pro football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida. The alleged victim has now filled a civil lawsuit naming Irvin in the Broward County Circuit Court.
The woman, known as "Jane Doe", alleges the sexual assault took place on July 4 or 5, 2007, and is seeking unspecified damages.
Larry Friedman, Irvin's attorney, labeled the allegations completely false, saying it was a case of "civil extortion: pay us or we'll ruin your life," adding "Nothing happened. There was no encounter between this Jane Doe and Michael Irvin. The entire story is false, it's bogus, it's made up."
Seminole tribal police originally received a report on the sexual assault from the woman on July 20, 2007. At the time, "Jane Doe" signed a waiver of prosecution, a spokesman for the Seminole tribe stated, adding"I think she just wanted to put this behind her."
The case was referred to state prosecutors, who declined to proceed.
The alleged victim's lawyer, David Lister, said that his client has passed a polygraph test. Lister also said that he had been in settlement talks with Irvin's lawyer. When Irvin's lawyer balked at Lister's terms, the suit was filed today, only three days before the Super Bowl is being played in Miami, Florida.
Irvin, a South Florida native, was born in Fort Lauderdale on March 5th, 1966. Before becoming an NFL star with the Cowboys, he played college football for the University of Miami Hurricanes. He has since become a commentator with ESPN and the NFL Network.
Friedman said that the woman wanted one million dollars or else she would file a lawsuit to coincide with the Super Bowl.
In 1996, Irvin was arrested on charges of cocaine possession at a hotel party celebrating his 30th birthday. After numerous court appearances, which featured Irvin wearing a full-length mink coat, he ultimately pled no contest to the charges and was sentenced to community service, fined $10,000.
Later that year, Irvin and teammate Erik Williams were accused of sexually assaulting a Dallas woman, Nina Shahravan, putting a gun to her head, while videotaping the scene. Shahravan was later proven to have fabricated the entire incident.
