Tess Rafferty - one of the cooks who make "The Soup" taste funny

Tess Rafferty, writer for "The Soup" on E!

It is said that, “Too many cooks spoil the broth.” Tell that to the writing staff of the hit E! show “The Soup”. Hosted by comedian Joel McHale, the weekly look at television has been a staple on the network for over five years, and one of the writers, comedian Tess Rafferty, has been there to see the ups, the downs, and the success of the show.

Rafferty, who current does stand-up comedy outside of her day job, probably has the sweetest job in the world; watch tv and making jokes about it. Rafferty, however, sees what too much of a good thing (or possibly a bad thing) can do.

“I won’t watch reality tv when I am done with this job,” Rafferty admits. “You start to realize the formula to these shows. You start to go ‘Here you go. This is the episode where this starts to happen.’ Or ‘This is the episode where the Bachelor has doubts or whatever it is.”

Don’t get Rafferty wrong, the job does have its perks. “The Soup” has been getting some walk on guests, and Rafferty got to meet one of her favorite tv actors.

“My favorite guest so far has been Michael Emerson. I am such a huge ‘Lost’ fan that it was really wonderful to have him in,” Rafferty stated. “He was so funny and spot on with his sketch. It was just so fantastic. For someone who does these dramatic roles, had just a great sense of comedic timing.”

“The Soup” has been gaining a lot of viewers and has a huge fandom of tv watchers. Rafferty says that the writers have just as much fun working on the show as the viewers themselves.

“It is still fun to see it like we present it,” Rafferty explains. “It is still fun to see the meetings where we show clips where you get the best of that episode or the funniest thing that happened, or the thing that wasn’t supposed to happen that we caught. It’s always fun to watch it in those little bits, which what I think is what makes our show as popular as it is; because people don’t have to watch the whole thing. They can get the best of what happened on reality that week.”

“The Soup” is on Fridays on E! Billings cable channel 53.
