Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart 'save lives' by not tanning

Twilight stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are being praised for two things - Coming clean on dating (read here) and being pale.

"Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are saving thousands of lives from cancer - by maintaining their pale complexions," Entertainment Daily writes quoting experts who argue the Twilight couple is promoting healthy skin by not showing off overexposure to sunlight.

The vampy fame surrounding vampires like "Edward Cullen" in Twilight and Alexander Skarsgard's True Blood character "Eric" offers youth another side of beauty that doesn't include exposing skin to harmful, UV rays. While Pattinson and Stewart aren't the first celebs to go pale, Dr. Raj Mallipeddi says the pale skin pair has good celebrity pull with tweens and will ultimately help to reduce cancer rates.

“People have to want to resemble the individual giving the message," Dr. Mallipeddi said to The Daily Star. "If that image comes in vogue then people will follow suit and ultimately that could be better for people’s skin." Mallipeddi's opinion is also supported by in-vogue cosmetics company, Urban Decay Cosmetics. A rep for the company, Eric Jimenz, agrees, saying, "Due to films such as Twilight, people see that pale skin can still be sophisticated, timeless and glamorous.”

Ironically enough, the UK is being led by celebrities like Kelly Osbourne and Nicole Roberts, to take a stand against tanning. Osbourne, who was lauded for her use of self-tanner on America's Dancing with the Stars, went on to endorse a self-tanning lotion, St. Tropez..

"Must get to bed im shooting an ad for st. tropez tomorrow. Crazy I know who would have thought I would be the face of a spray tan!" the 25-year-old Kelly tweeted pre-shoot. Later adding, "This shoot is really fun just got my spray tan and I can't get over how good it looks I'm not orange at all!"

Girls Aloud group member Nicole Roberts its also on board to communicate the dangers of tanning to tanning bed or tanning salon addicts - A group she calls "tanorexics".

"I tried to cover up my insecurities by turning into a big-time tanorexic," Roberts says on the group's blog, dishing on her campaign against tanning. "I was very young when I [started tanning]," the singer tells the Star. "As I got older, I realized fake tan was rather messy and I wanted to look cleaner, classier and more demure. I started looking at women like Lily Cole and Sophie Ellis Bextor – beautiful women with their pale skin, rather than looking at the run-of-the-mill, tanned, average lady."

Roberts, along with others, prove Dr. Mallipeddi's point that in vogue paleness does catch on. On the other side, celebrities looked up to in the states for being tan include teen pop singer Miley Cyrus, the cast of The Jersey Shore who say it's "all about the tan" and Kate Gosselin

Adrienne/Lara - Thanks for the reads. I get tons of readers that post back on this article who are FOR tanning. I even receive letters from US orgs who support tanning. It's a very interesting topic and even moreso when celebrities get involved. The Daily Mail/UK continue to cover this topic more and more as time moves forward. Keep posted to see if the US picks up!

This is very misinformed. Tanning does not kill. Being TOO pale can be a sign of Vitaman D deficiency. I have worked in the salon industry for 4 years and have never heard of some one dying!

I love that there are finally a few pale celebs. I've always been teased for my super light complexion. As sad as it is, our society looks to celebs and the media to tell us what's pretty and what isn't. It's nice that pale is coming back in style, because for some of us, it's just how we are.

ok, is it just me or does it look like Robert has his shirt off in the picture? and is Kristen holding him? Or is she just holding her hair? BTW i love both of them and this is a cool article.

Angel- Thanks for the feedback. It's interesting to see the trends in the UK vs the US. For instance, beauty pageants. You saw what we did with the Miss American beauty pageant contestant photos (Maxim-like) and the same year, the UK decided to take out the "bikini round" and add in a "sports competition".

The last line was very funny -- the thought of us in the states "looking up to" Miley Cyrus, the Jersey Shore cast, and Kate Gosselin is very scary. I can't think of a trio that are more mocked over here! As far as tan celebs go, probably Jennifer Aniston would be more of a UV-laced role model.
