Celebrity dance: National Dance Day events celebrity support, over 10K in nationwide support

Time for celebrity dance to take stage nationwide in honor of National Dance Day 2010. Nearly 11,000 dancers nationwide have RSVP'd for the event and celebrity dance icons are helping set up.

"So You Think You Can Dance" producer, judge and co-creator Nigel Lythgoe launched the National Dance Day event to further the promotion of dance education and dance fitness across the U.S.

About National Dance Day

"National Dance Day will take place on July 31, 2010," reports Lythgoe's Dizzy Feet Foundation website. "National Dance Day will include a variety of dance themed activities for people of all ages. It will empower, challenge and inspire everyone to try various styles of dance ranging from hip-hop to ballroom to anything that moves. Above all, it will encourage everyone to DANCE as a means to stay fit and be healthy."

Celebrity Dance Support

With Nigel and "So You Think You Can Dance" heading up leadership for the nationwide event, other celebrity dance icons are jumping on board.

Dancer entertainer and fitness maven Billy Blanks, Jr. and his wife Sharon Catherine Blanks are hosting their own "Dance With Me Cardio Fit Dance Party" free for all ages. Sponsored by Lionsgate and Exercise TV, the event will be held in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley at Sherman Oaks Galleria.

Even political figures are jiving for the cause. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, who Nigel gives credit for helping to establish the day as a national holiday, will host the "National Dance Day Flash Mob at Malcolm X-Meridian Park" in Washington D.C. on July 31.

"More than 30 percent of Americans are obese and childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years,"said Norton of the event, also featuring a guest appearance by Nigel. "Television shows such as 'So You Think You Can Dance' are not only entertaining but are also encouraging people to live a physically active lifestyle. Holding a National Dance Day in the nation's capital is a terrific way to promote fitness and fight obesity."

Elsewhere in the nation, other events are rocking dancing feet coast to coast. Organized by the dancing show, here's a rundown of National Dance Day events happening nationwide...

Kentucky: The City of Hopkinsville is hosting a demonstration of dance styles from a variety of dance instructors, classes and studios scattered throughout the city.

New York: The Ailey Extension is inviting all New Yorkers to participate in National Dance Day by taking one of almost 20 dance and fitness classes being offered on July 31. The Ailey Studios is the nation's largest building dedicated to dance and is offering specials on National Dance Day to encourage newcomers.

Texas: Since not all dance was created equally, Dallas Burlesque dance instructor Jana Edele will be leading an entire village of dancers through a Burlesque and Body Sculpt class. An extension of classes held weekly, Edele and the Verandah Club at the Hilton Anatole are teaming up for the event.

Alabama: Folks in Mobile are cordially invited National Dance Day with Broadway South Dance for a free dance class, welcoming ages 3 and up.

Maryland: Want to learn the "Dance Day" NappyTabs dance routine? Western Maryland residents are asked to come join Urbana Dance Studio on July 31st to pick up the routine. In addition, the event will include Zumba, salsa, film dance and a freestyle party to follow the classes.
