Once again, the Chihuahua Pageant crown was claimed by a male, this time by Spidey, brother of the famous Jilli Dog. When the three finalists were announced, Spidey's owner, Rick Caran, looked as serious as one might while waiting for the results of the presidential election. In the end, with support from the audience, his beloved Spidey won!
Spidey's talent was clearly the ace in the hole. He demonstrated the art of pushing a cart across the floor. While the others had wonderful talents, Spidey was the only one who included advice on how to train your dog to do his trick.
There were three categories for the pageant: Street Chihuahua, Bowwow Talent and The Bling. Street Chihuahua was taken by the one with the best casual wear - Coco Bella. Runner up was Mei-mei, owned by Carlene Mahanna. Bowow Talent went to the dog with the best talent - Spidey. The talent runner up was Roxie, who sang along with mom. And The Bling - the category for the best formal wear - was claimed by Tommi T, who won best casual wear last year. The runner up in that category was Bandit, also the winner of the 2010 Barking Beauty Pageant.
The contest was judged based in part by the ability to walk the red carpet to flaunt their outfits. The judges were Celebrity designer Robert Negrin, animal rights activist William Cassius and pet star agent Cathryn Long. Hosted by Leslie Hughes of the Barking Beauty Pageant, proceeds from the pageant benefited Sean Casey Animal Rescue.
Eli also gave two special prizes of merit - one to Zeena, for her overall talent and charm, and another to Miki, for her cuteness and ability to make the crowd go "aw!" Miki's brother, "Mr Biggles", took the crown last year.
Special recognition should also be given to Chico, whose owner - Stella Panzarino - changed outfits to match him in every single category. (We are still wondering exactly where she changed, since all the contestants waited together in another room!) Truth be told, all the dogs were winners, but it was a strange day - several of the the dogs who are very trained just were not up to doing their tricks. In the words of animal agent Cathryn Long, "it was a full moon". In Eli's words, "it's hot - let's just have fun!"
Congratulations to all the winners, including those who didn't come home with prizes. The point of the pageant is to have fun and raise money for animals in need, which was accomplished, thanks to all the participants.
