Josh Kelley volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club and sings with children

Country singer and songwriter Josh Kelley volunteered his time yesterday at the Boys and Girls Club of the Austin Area. While onsite, the popular singer served lunch to the children, helped with arts and crafts projects and gave the children the best memory of all; he sang with them. Josh Kelley’s visit was part of his country-wide tour visiting food banks and raising awareness about child hunger in the United States.

Josh Kelley: “Now that we’ve approached the halfway point of summer, a time when many children can’t depend on the free or reduced-priced meals they receive throughout the school year, giving children access to nutritious meals becomes ever so important. As a new dad it is hard to imagine that millions of children face hunger and don’t know where they will get their next meal. I am proud to be visiting sites like the Boys and Girls Club of Austin Area to spend time with the kids, and also celebrate the volunteers and staff members who are making great strides in an effort toward ending child hunger in their communities.”

Josh Kelley visited Austin’s Capital Area Food Bank of Texas summer food program site, the Boys and Girls Club of America just when the food bank received a much-needed grant from ConAgra Foods Foundation and Feeding America for $20,000. The Hunger-Free Summer Grant will help the food bank fund their summer food programs like the one Josh Kelley volunteered his time at yesterday.

This summer it is estimated that 18 million children could face increased hunger since they do not have access to the reduced-price or free meal programs provided by the school system. According to Feeding America, in the state of Texas there are about 1.8 million children that do not know where their next meal is coming from.

Josh Kelley will volunteer his time at a total of five food banks throughout the country that have received the Hunger-Free Summer Grant. In addition to helping raise awareness about child hunger in the United States, Josh Kelley is making the summer vacations of many children extremely special; with memories of him singing with them and doing arts and crafts with them, which will last a lifetime.
