Helping homeless cats and other animals in Montgomery County can be as easy as walking your dog. That’s what over 600 animal lovers—and their dogs—will be doing at Wheaton Regional Park on Sunday, June 6, as they participate in the Montgomery County Humane Society’s 12th annual Paws in the Park. The event, which includes 1K, 3K, and 5K trails, raises funds to

  • promote adoption of homeless, abandoned and abused animals;
  • provide educational programs for all ages on responsible pet caregiving;
  • offer enrichment for the dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds and other animals at the county animal shelter; and
  • support life-saving programs and services such as animal medical care, reduced cost spay/neuter, animal behavior assistance and more.

Walkers can participate individually or as part of a team. Participants aren’t required to bring a canine companion, so dogless walkers can walk in honor of the family cat or other pet, or in memory of a departed pet. In addition to the walks, Paws in the Park will feature pet games and contests, an off-leash dog park, a “flealess” market for pet-friendly vendors, food, music, raffles, prizes, the rescue zone, and more.

Registration is free. Participants can register and begin fundraising online. You can also register on the day of the event by downloading a registration form from the event Web site and bringing it and your donations to the park.

Location and time:
Wheaton Regional Park is located at 11751 Orebaugh Ave. in Wheaton. Registration begins at 12 p.m. The walk kicks off at 1 p.m., and the event ends at 4.

The rules:

  • You may register on-site the day of the event starting at 12 p.m.
  • All dogs must have a current rabies vaccination and must be licensed.
  • All walkers are welcome, with or without a dog.
  • For safety reasons, well-behaved dogs only – no other pets may walk.
  • All walkers must read and agree to the waiver at check-in.
  • Female dogs in season may not participate.
  • Dogs must be leashed (six-foot maximum leash length) and kept under control at all times. No retractable leashes, please.
  • Any unruly or aggressive dogs will be asked to leave.
  • Participants are expected to practice responsible pet ownership at all times during the event.
