Finding a new feline companion in the greater DC region has just gotten a little easier, thanks to a recent partnership between Comcast and the Montgomery County Humane Society. Through Comcast On Demand, digital cable customers can now tune in to Pet Adoptions On Demand to view profiles of cats, dogs, and other small pets who are looking for homes. The service is available 24 hours a day and offers potential adopters a convenient new way to search for an animal companion.

The profiles run between one and two minutes each and show staff members interacting with and talking about the pet. A total of 15 animals, including between 5 and 8 cats, are featured on the service at any one time. Since the first run of Montgomery County’s Pet Adoptions On Demand in mid-July, there has been a lot of interest in the featured animals, said b. j. Altschul, director of community and educational relations for the Montgomery County Humane Society. She added that the cats featured in the profiles represent only a small sampling of the more than 100 cats currently available for adoption. It is hoped that the televised profiles will also draw increased attention to the many adoptable pets who don’t make it onto the screen.

Comcast’s Pet Adoptions On Demand is an expanding nationwide program. The Montgomery County Humane Society is the third local organization to sign on with the service, joining the Washington Humane Society and the Frederick County (Maryland) Animal Control Center.

To access Pets On Demand, Comcast Digital Cable customers can go to the “Get Local” section of the On Demand menu and select “Pet Adoptions.” Each animal profile includes a unique identification number. Viewers interested in a featured pet can then go to the Montgomery County Humane Society website(www.mchumane.org) for more information.
