How to name your cat

Maybe it’s just the elitist wordsmith in me, but I will judge you based on the name you give your cat.

How many "Tigers" or "Pumpkins" have you met (and promptly forgotten) in your lifetime? Now, how many "Pounce de Leons" have you had the pleasure of acquainting? "Millard Furmores"? "Mr. FussyBusses"?

If your cat is like a family member, why not give her a unique name that reflects her personality -- not just her fur color?

First off, don’t feel obligated to name your new kitty as soon as you bring her home. This almost always results in a name that doesn't stick. Good names take time to stew. Get to know her for a few weeks and see what comes to you.

One way to add instant ‘zazz to any cat name is by adding a title or other such prefix. Sir, Mr., Dr., Princess … cats love the sense of formality and frankly, they think they've earned it.

If you need some help getting your creative juices flowing, check out "Bad Cat: 244 Not-So-Pretty Kitties and Cats Gone Bad" by Seattleite, Jim Edgar. Each cattitude-crammed page features an outrageous picture of a different bad cat, along with a hilariously fitting quote, name and hobby. Edgar has a knack for extracting any feline’s je nais se quois from only a picture. Each profile is pure gestalt! You’re bound to get a few ideas for how to match name with purrsonality.

Cats respond differently to their names than dogs do – but they do know them. So, it’s worthwhile to name your kitty with care. If their titles lack creativity and substance they will know it – and silently judge you for life. No pressure.

Another great post! I'm partial to literary names for cats - like Ulysses or Atticus Finch.
