Recently, a large feral/stray cat colony was discovered in a mobile home park in Middletown, Ohio that includes many kittens and breeding adults. There are over 100 cats and kittens, most likely many are abandoned pets and their offspring. This project was first mentioned to SCOOP (Save Cats and Obliterate OverPopulation), however it’s beyond what SCOOP can handle alone as far as trapping and funding. An organized effort will be necessary to help the cats in this mobile home park.
Some county officials are telling the mobile home park manger that the cats are a health issue and something must be done with them. The option was given to her to have the cats trapped and taken to the county shelter to be euthanized. This trap and kill technique is outdated, inhumane, and ineffective. Cats in traps taken to county shelters will be killed. More cats will fill the space in no time, called the “vacuum effect.” SCOOP has already discussed the process of TNR (trap/neuter/return) with the park manager, and she has agreed that this method of addressing the feral cats is acceptable.
Funding for surgery and vaccination for so many cats is desperately needed. SCOOP is looking for help from other organizations and the public to help fund the process to spay/neuter and vaccinate these cats and kittens. SCOOP will be able to secure a special rate from one of the area clinics, but it'll still amount to thousands of dollars needed. The next obstacle is organizing the mass trapping effort, which cannot occur until after money is secured.
No donation is too small. Donations can be sent to SCOOP, Inc.; P.O. Box 46624 ; Cincinnati , OH : 45246-0624. A tax receipt will be provided. For more information about SCOOP, please visit their website at http://www.scoopcat.org/
