Angews cats need re-homing
Town Cats, a homeless cat and kitten rescue with headquarters in Morgan Hill, is asking the public for help in re-homing a colony of cats that live at the California Agnews Development facility in San Jose. The facility is closed and now for sale. Town Cats received permission from State of California officials to rehabilitate and relocate the over 70 cats living on the grounds.
Rosi Mirko, Town Cats founder, said the organization has already relocated about 30 cats but still is seeking outdoor homes for about 30 more adults. “In addition to the adult cats, of which some are senior with special needs, we also have three litters of kittens about five weeks old,” Mirko said.
In a particularly distressing situation, one of the kittens got tangled in a tree so badly the circulation in his leg was cut off. That resulted in a needed amputation of his leg. The kitten, along with his bonded sister, are now safely together in Town Cats’ care, but the organization has incurred very significant costs for the surgery.

For the past 12 years, Town Cats has been coming to the rescue of homeless and abandoned cats throughout Santa Clara County. In addition to taking cats from kill shelters, Town Cats works with local municipal animal control to help with large rescue operations involving feral colonies, such as this recent situation at California Agnews facility and the city of San Jose Ranch Cat Relocation Project in 2008, as well as hoarding situations. Town Cats places about 1,000 cats and kittens each year into loving homes throughout Santa Clara, San Mateo, and San Francisco counties and beyond.
New outdoor homes needed for Agnews cats
Here’s how you can help the Agnews cats:
o Provide outdoor sanctuary to some of the cats on your property – even one two if you are a homeowner, more if you live on larger property, for example, a farm where you could use barn cats
o Foster kittens
o Donate to help Town Cats to help defray the vet bills and ongoing care for the cats during the re-homing/foster process
