Rescuing cats is what a local shelter does on a regular basis and when the going got tough they were able to raise more than $3000.00 in a matter of days to help save one single life.
Second Hand Purrs (SHP) took in a cat after someone abandoned it on a doorstep with a note saying they could no longer care for this pregnant cat. After taking in the calico cat named Mimi, they quickly knew something was wrong. She developed a fever and was clearly ill. SHP took Mimi to the 24 hour animal ER in Greenfield where she was generously cared for by Dr. Lichtenberger.
After Mimi received a full evaluation it was found she was not pregnant but she did have a life threatening infection called Pyometra and had to be spayed immediately. SHP opted to proceed with the surgery and Mimi was sent back to foster care to recover. Unfortunately her recovery didn't go as well as they had anticipated. Mimi returned back to the ER a couple of more times in the following days as her fever spiked to deathly levels.
As this no-kill shelter advocated saving her life, the mounting medical bills started to hit them hard. Instead of questioning if they could help continue to save her life, they simply asked how and put it into action. An online fund was started and a mass email asking supporters to rally together to help save her life was sent out. Being a small organization, medical bills can add up quickly and they knew they needed more help than usual to fight this battle.
Within the first 24 hours of the email blast they had almost reached their goal of $2200.00. Now, the dollar amount is over $3500.00 and keeps rising. A second email blast was sent out by the President of Second Hand Purrs, Susan, thanking everyone for the support and to define how they were going to spend the money. The money raised would pay for Mimi's health care and also be able to give her the necessary dental work she will need to have in the near future.
After Mimi visited the ER several more times with a nagging fever she pulled through and is currently doing very well. Mimi will be available for adoption soon and remains in foster care. Susan is overwhelmed with gratitude, "If it weren't for all the caring and generous people out there, this little girl would not be alive. She is truly full of energy and life and needs a loving forever home."
